I went to Redline's website today to look up a part number and noticed it had changed. This caused me to find out that Redline was bought by Phillips 66 when I wasn't looking. Checking the specs against an older data sheet I had, the HTHS for the 5w20 has dropped from 3.3 to 3.0 (which is a [censored] big change!) and the advertising copy no longer mentions being a PAO/ester base stock.

So what the heck happened here?

When you run it for 10k or 15k in hard-use vehicles, the extended service interval makes it as cheap as parts store oil and still has higher HTHS, etc.

If you're a numpty who's still changing oil every 3k, yeah it doesn't make any sense.

Things are always changing. I'll bet their racing lubes are nearly the same, but the price will prolly rise frown

Formerly in marine engineering. In an earlier life I owned my own petroleum tank truck, and hauled for the majors and independent's.

I see they now recommend d6 for the prius; in the past it was d4; apparently d6 lacked a particular additive needed to protect the plastic components.

Posted in another thread already, didn't see this one... but it looks like the change was something in the 2012-2013 timeframe.

Here's a link to the 5w20 page from 2013. Nothing has changed from today's specs: https://web.archive.org/web/20131008184755/http://www.redlineoil.com:80/product.aspx?pid=1&pcid=21

You have to go back to 2012 for a change to show up: https://web.archive.org/web/20120711114137/http://www.redlineoil.com:80/product.aspx?pid=1&pcid=21
