So the 2 year/25k mile free service is over for my Camry, and I'll soon get to experience the wonderful Toyota canister oil filter during my next oil change!

I need to get a special wrench cap to remove the outer housing of said canister. Anyone have recommendations on what brand to buy and/or what brand to avoid? Thanks!

Is this the type of filter that you change from underneath? Where it has a drain built in?

If so, I have the Assenmacher one from Amazon. It works ok but occasionally the wrench will "stick" to the filter cap. You need a.. I think a 24mm socket to use it, but the filter cap doesn't warrant that much torque.

If I could buy another one, I'd get one like this:

Great thread ! I'm approaching 30 K miles on my '16 and I really need as much schooling as I can get on changing the oil and general up keep. I have a pair of 4s .

I have the Assenmacher tool and it sticks to the filter too. Having to use a 24mm socket instead of a 3/8 or 1/2 inch ratchet isn't as convenient.

I didn't know there was a factory Toyota tool - I'll look into getting that one!

CTA Tools 2475 Extra Heavy Duty forged and machined from 6140 steel. Plays a nice tune too! Expensive yes. About as good as it gets though.

LOL yeah this was part of my research when considering Toyota for purchase; I have also decided to go with the OEM tool.

Looks like the second one listed would be the one to get. There's no telling how tight the lube "tech" tightened it the last time. I need to purchase one of those for our Camry as well. Like the OP, the free oil changes ended.

A side note, I much prefer the canister on my VW. The 32mm socket is fool proof to use.

I've always used oil filter pliers. I already had them and they work.

Does the new oil filter come with the plastic oil drainer nipple doohicky? I haven't been fortunate enough to deal with one. I know we've talked about this Toyota filter setup often, but I just don't get it. There's two O-rings needed and two potential sources of leaks. Why not just keep it up top and self draining like most?

Agree that up top makes more sense...but yes the oil drainer is supposed to come with the new filter, along with the two O-rings.

^The filter elements do come with both o-rings and the plastic spout. I've only had to use to large o-ring for my GF's Lexus IS250 as it doesn't have the separate drain.
