I decided to purchase and cut open a few Toyota OEM oil filters. I have the D1, D3 and the G2. Supposedly all are interchangeable???

The first pic is the D1, 2nd pic is D3 and third pic is the G2. The D1 and D3 are made in Thailand and the G2 in made in the good ol' USA.

Take a pic of the dome end of the US-made filter. What is the date code on it?

This is printed on the end cap of USA made oil filter.

What does this mean?

Means it's made by Purolator. I'm not impressed at all. Seems that they are getting all the oem contracts these days. That filter doesn't look too well made either.

I guess the metal end caps impress me. Should they?

My whole life I've mostly run either orange cans or tough guards or OEM. OEM are usually the cheapest from my experience (price anyway). Most people I know run quick lube brands. Oddly, nobody I know has had an engine failure from oil issues. I don't get the fascination with $12+ oil filters used with $15-20 synthetic oil for 5-10k miles. But that's just me.

Thinking you mean, it's on the dome end of the filter can, not element endcap. As for code meaning, manufacture date code and discussed HERE.

The Thai Toyota OFs typical no endcap construction. The length difference likely attributable to the difference between longer 4386 equivalent application vs shorty 4967 equivalent application. Interesting thing about the Thai made spin on filters, take the can, adbv and bypass away and you've got what the current Toyota cartridge filter looks like.

I like the silicone adbv on the Puro made Toyota. What I can see of it, looks ok.

Made July 31, 2017 in Fayetteville by Purolator. I would say Toyota has completely specified their G2 filter to their own requirements. They must not like louvers closed either. The G2 and D1 are the same outer size, big difference on the inside, especially the Thai filters have deep pleats and a small center tube. That's the way it should be IMO. On the G2 box, what does it say "Made in (something something) USA?

Looks like "Made and printed in USA". Apparently the box made in the USA also.

I'm currently using an Amsoil filter for 5k. Please pray wisdom for me.

True, if you also take away the baseplate, center tube, gasket, seam, and the equipment or labor to assemble all those parts.

Rephrasing and put in it's simplest terms, the topic Thai Toyota spin on/canister filter 'elements', construction wise, look very similar to the current Toyota cartridge filter.

This noted as contrast to most other vehicle manufacturers filters, where their vehicle spin on applications construction appearance 'generally speaking', don't closely resemble their cartridge filter application's appearance.

If there was any, that should clear up any ambiguity of the reference and notation of topic filters to Toyota cartridge applications.

That points out one of the reasons why the endcapless Toyota (and similar) cartridges are a clever design---little or no capital cost for tooling to switch to cartridges.

Only use the D3 on my truck, it calls for the D1 but I use the longer filter because I stretch the OCI. Going to Fram Ultra next however and see if it makes a difference, if not, will keep running the D3. Wouldn't use that Puro made one if you paid me to, though. Purolator will never reside under the hood of any of my vehicles ever again. Your 4Runner should be able to use any of them, it's specced for the D1 like my Tacoma but I recommend the D3 because bigger is better! Lol
