I'm a big fan of moly after living through the Honda VCM class action suit. Part of Honda's engineered solution to VCM failures involved impregnating piston skirts with moly so that it provided a time-release effect through the factory fill OCI. Honda believes high levels of moly are good for new engines. I'm willing to spend a couple of bucks to make sure this Mazda gets some.

It seems to be a Japanese automotive thing that moly is good and more moly is even better. The other Japanese automakers also use high moly oils for their factory fills in Japan. Subaru, Toyota, Mitsubishi and on. Idemitsu supplies a lot of factory fill to most of the domestic assembly plants.

Mazda has incorporated a lot of friction reducing elements into their new engines. The moly coatings and impregnating surfaces mentioned before are all utilized. Nano polishing of journals is another I have read about. There is quite a bit of engineering thought that goes into these engines.

Here are a couple of old BITOG threads that are very informative. The data may or may not be outdated since we haven't had a recent analysis on the product. They do make for interesting reading though.

Mobil thinks tons of moly is great for racing too. It definitely has a low-friction and protective effect. Here is a VOA of M1 Racing 0w30:

Merely 1 cup of that racing oil in a 5-quart sump doubles the amount of moly in M1 0w30 AFE.

MED CENTER MAZDA is awesome! Ordered Wednesday, arrived Friday via Fed Ex. I now have 10 qts of Mazda Magic Moly in my inventory, five oil filters and drain plug washers plus a cap wrench I know will fit properly. Great parts dept! Reminds me of Bernardi Honda. Why aren't they all this good?

One even cheaper source of Mazda moly 0w20 is https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B072QX...S7W87ZGT8DBRT8N where the Zepro Moly 0w20 is actually the same oil Mazda sources, and its only $6 per quart in 5-quart jugs.

Mazda owner's manual says to use Mazda brand or Castrol. I have no experience with either of these. IIRC, The Mazda oil was highly regarded when it came out for its VI and high moly content. After a bit of Googling, it seems the Mazda oil is only available through its dealers. I'm going to assume they won't retail at a competitive price but I've got an email into my Parts Manager and if you know of a good mail order source, by all means let's hear about it. What about the Castrol? Edge is $3 higher than AFE at the Mart. I would assume this is a high quality oil but haven't studied up on it.

Thanks in advance for the input.

I would say this should economically fit.

Same company, but the same oil? I thought Zepro was a low viscosity product aimed at start-stop engines etc? I haven't seen that name in a long time. The website says Zepro uses "advanced molybdenum " for whatever that means. Tri-knuckles?

It has a VI of 232 ! Isn't that a new record? Haven't seen anything that high.
Also, the moly+boron amount is huge, biggest ever outside of dedicated racing oil. The Idemitsu-made Mazda Genuine Motor Oil 0w20 'only' has 700 ppm moly, not this 947 ppm, so I guess the rumors that both Idemitsu oils are the same may not be correct. For comparison, Redline 0w20 has 869 ppm, now #2 in the moly wars!
