The rumor on the Corvette Forum right now is that there is going to be a new version of Mobil 1 0w40 coming out which meets the Dexos specification and will be used as the factory fill starting with the 2019 Corvettes. It will also be backwards compatible on the Corvette too. It will most likely be a completely separate version of the current 0w40 which is formulated to meet a lot of European car specifications.

I'm undecided as to whether I will run this oil on my future 2018 Corvette or if I'll stick with 5w30.

Betting it’s back to PAO/GIII/POE… after an event like Harvey … the whole supply chain gets a big re assessment …

I hate how Pennzoil has their hooks in Dodge.
Thier 0w40 to meet the Hemi specs is hard to obtain at any sort of good price.
At least Mobil 1 can be bought at Walmart.

That's because the M1 20/30 grades use a lot of magnesium in place of some calcium. It will be interesting to see if M1 follows Castrol's lead and drops calcium levels in their 0w-40 and replaces it with magnesium.

Yes, it was on there.

Chevy still pushes Mobil 1. The factory fill is M1 5w30. It's all over the owners manual and even the "competitive driving" section says to use Mobil 1 15w50.

Speaking of filler caps..and 0W40 factory fill.

That is the choice of Ilmor engineering on their marine " 710" 700HP V10.

Looking at the dexos1 and dexos2 tests at http://www.aftonchemical.com/Afton/media/PdfFiles/Specification_Handbook.pdf it looks like the current 0w40 would pass all the dexos2 stuff except phosphorus, sulphated ash, and/or sulphur limits. If it falls under dexos1, it would need to pass the Fuel Economy Testing Sequence VIB, and a 40-weight HTHS 3.5 oil like that can't pass that test, even with a ton of moly FM thrown in like Pennz SRT 0w40 has. ...... I guess they have to amend the spec! GM can just shape the spec to suit their needs, since they are in the driver's seat here.

It looks like this oil is going to be available sooner than expected, as it was announced today that the 2019 Corvette goes into production the end of January! So this oil will probably have to hit the retail stores pretty quickly also. I am leaning towards running it in my new 2018, there must be a reason why GM has decided to go with this oil as factory fill. Perhaps in their testing they found the 5w30 was maybe too thin for hard usage?

Who woulda thunkit. Thicker oil.

The latest M1 0w40 is just about as low in viscosity as you can go, and still be a 40-weight. The HTHS is 3.6.

M1 0W-40 was the factory fill on my 6.1 powered sig car from SRT. Many successful track sessions with it, only used another oil twice in its near 110k miles. It's a fine oil for a V8 that has some power density.

XOM already has an M1 product that meets Dexos2: M1 0w-40 ESP. It's already on Dexos2 list.

Right. As of now, no Xw-40 grades are eligible for Dexos1 approval. The only approved grades are Xw-16, Xw-20, and Xw-30.

The 2019 Corvette went into production yesterday, so more info on the new 0w40 is now out. Apparently it is going to be the ESP 0w40 that's been out in Europe for a while. GM dealers will be getting this oil on Feb 1st and retail stores should have it in about 6 months.

Here is a link to a thread on Corvette forum which also shows the technical data and the MSDS for this oil if anyone here wants to decipher it and help figure out what the base oil is

5-10% PAO, 60-70% Group III, probably VISOM.
