Any of you BITOG'ers know a trick or an inside scoop on scoring a deal for a moving truck/van? I know a few of you also think outside the box, so a creative solution would be welcomed.

Found a great deal on a storage unit, but can't seem to find a deal on a truck. I've heard of trying different area codes for pickup/dropoff, but so far haven't found a deal.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Ask what discounts they offer. AARP, military? Sam's club smile ? See if they do weekday specials (vice busy weekend).

A word of caution. When I was looking for a moving truck Budget was the cheapest so I "booked" online. On moving day I had time off, people to help and Budget called me that morning to tell me that they didn't have a truck for me, I called every other Budget location in the metro area, and no one had a truck despite them being available online. I ended up renting one in my destination city since there was going to be an empty trip either way but I was not happy.

Many Storage units will offer you a loan of a free truck as a business incentive to get you business.

Most people are leaving high tax states for lower/no tax states regions.

If you are in one of those destination states, there might be an abundance of trucks that need to get back to the original destination state/region
so, you might already find a lower rate.

What kind of a deal are you wanting? This isn't like renting a car. If your renting locally or from one city in Florida to somewhere else in Florida, your not going to find a magic deal.
One way far away? Example: I bet its a lot cheaper to move from Florida to New York than New York to Florida.
Most self storage businesses that offer a free loaner truck cost more per month. The independent no name self storage units typically on the outskirts of town are usually cheaper.

Every time I've moved,Uhaul was always the most expensive. Penske and Budget were always the cheapest and best deal.

If you are a NRA member check the car (truck) rental member benefits.

While this is very true, not all of the competition comes with a ramp. I found this out the hard way and my back paid the price.

That ramp is a life saver!

Have you noticed that every time you see a broken down moving truck by the side of the road it is a U-Haul?
I have personally had good luck with Penske and would gladly pay more if it did cost more.

Not knocking Penske, but I do see a significantly more UHaul trucks out and about than I do Penske trucks.

I should clarify that I am just looking to move my stuff from one storage shed to another, about 30 miles away from the current shed.

I agree completely, but all of the broken down ones seem to be U-Haul. I did read an article once that stated U-Haul kept trucks in service much longer than the other majors, which may explain it.
Of course with only a 30 mile trip it probably doesn't matter.
On my last short move I did find Budget to be very competitive with a moderately sized diesel van that had a lift gate.
