I grew up next to Lake Erie in Ohio and had a 73' VW Beetle during my junior and senior years of high school in the 90's. I ran Castrol 30W year round.

10w30 would have been my thickest oil.
now it is 5w30 . Not much difference.

Ran some mineral Quaker State 10w-40 in my old '91 Stanza in northern NJ back in the mid 90s.

Fast forward 20 years, and I'm still running 10w-40, although it's synthetic this time. smile

5W50 but I don't think winters here really count.

+1, but ran it during Canadian winters in my 98 Sienna. Had no issues.

But my Australian winters don't count, they are fairly warm.

The thinnest oil I have ever used in summer is the oil I am using right now, M1 5W30, my very first ILSAC oil. I know !!! .... Just call me Tig2 (meant as a compliment)

Shell Helix 25W-70.

didn't get below -8C (about 20F)...nothing blew up.

Time to full oil pressure didn't change. On the J Car engine, you could see the cam oil holes, and it "flowed" just fine.

I used to run GTX 20-50 year round in an early VW bug. More recently M1 0w-40 European Formula in an 08 Jeep Wrangler.
