I'm disappointed.
I've had nothing but iPhones since the 3G came out in 2008. My usual upgrade interval has been 2 years. I got the 3G (my first smartphone) in 2008, then the iPhone 4 in 2010, then the iPhone 5 in 2012. The iPhone 5 was such a great phone that I kept it for 3 years, only upgrading when the iPhone 6S came out in Sept. 2015 (and that's my current phone).
In the past, I've looked forward to the big software updates that precede the release of the new iPhones every year. Often times, they introduced great and useful and fun new functionality, and the integration of the new software has been relatively seamless.
That wasn't the case this time. There aren't many bugs, but the ones that have popped up are pretty annoying.
Here are the bugs I've noticed so far:
Bluetooth connectivity with other devices:
- Phone will no longer connect with my Escort Max 360 radar detector's iPhone app, Escort Live.
- Phone used to connect seamlessly with my Garmin Forerunner 220 GPS running watch. Now, I have to turn the phone off, then back on, sometimes several times, to get it to connect with the Garmin Connect app and download my runs and rides.
Touch ID problems:
- The biggest thing I've noticed is when opening text messages from a locked screen. This process used to be seamless - I'd slide the text icon over when I received a text, then put my thumb on the home button, and it would always open right up. Not any more. about half the time, it refuses to recognize my thumb. What's weird is that when I actually press the home button, it will always recognize it. It seems to be just when I try to open Messages from the locked screen by sliding the Messages icon over that it doesn't want to recognize. I also have it set to recognize multiple fingers on each hand. Sometimes it will recognize a different finger when I try that, and sometimes not.
Messages (texts) Problems:
- There's a problem where the Messages app will hang up and the window where you enter the text won't come up. I've encountered it several times but I'm having trouble remembering exactly the problem right now. Next time it happens and it's fresh on my mind, I'll try to remember to post it up here.
General "Laggyness":
- This doesn't really affect functionality, but I've noticed that the Home screen is a little slower and much less smooth to return when I press the Home button to go back to the Home screen from an app. It will "hang up" for a second or so, sometimes. All my iPhones have done this, I think, to one degree or another, for some reason. But now it's worse since this iOS 11 update.
A couple of days ago, Apple released the first patch - iOS 11.0.1. I was initially relieved - I was confident that Apple had fixed the problems I'd been experiencing. I was wrong.
My purpose for this post is information sharing and also it's a good place to document issues. I don't really want this thread to turn into an Apple-bashing session or a discussion on the merits and drawbacks of Apple vs. Android. Instead, I'd like to hear from those of you who have iPhones who have or have not had these issues since adopting iOS 11. Any tips for minimizing or fixing these problems is also obviously appreciated.
Also, I would like to make Apple aware of these problems. Anyone have suggestions for the best way to document the problems and send to Apple?
