This is an older article from 2012. MIT discusses using nanotechnology and magnets to separate oil from the water for cleaning on oil spills.

I always wondered why oil pipelines are not built with an oil catch basin built under them.Should be law. Like double wall hulls for oil tankers.

If a pipeline ruptures and spills a couple hundred thousand litres, you're going to need a heck of a catch basin.
