I'm thinking of switching over to 30w oil in all my fam's vehicles except daughter's Lexus Hybrid.

Been running 0w-20 in wife's Sienna (no issues..yet), 5w-20 in my DI Lexus and son's Avalanche.

Sienna is well over 150k
My Lexus is approaching 130k
Kid's cars are around 90k

Now that gas $ have settled, I'm less concerned about that and more about cleanliness of engine and long-term reliability.
I'd like to hear your stories of your switch.

There is a one per day quota, sometimes we like to be above average.

FWIW My Mustang takes 5W50 and my mom's Ecoboost Fusion calls for 5W30 but gets 0W40.

20-30 down south is nothing. To be honest I don't think it will make any difference. That being said your vehicles seem to be doing fine with thinner oil. Why change?

I'd use the oil suggested for use in Australia for the same vehicle. You're not in the upper Midwest.

5w20 should be "cleaner running" than a 5w30.

How bout you just substitute a qt of 5w40 instaed of going "all In".

My Rogue engine likes it as thin as it will go just before it starts mechanical clattering. This is about 1 qt of 5w20 into 4 qts of 10w30.

I'm not in the thick or thin oil camp, it's a ridiculous debate.
I just use what i deem convenient for my cars.
And yes, that means that i run 20W-50 Dino in both of my cars, one because it specs 20W-50 and the other because it burns oil and it's a beater.

In EU we leave/reserve that oily water for auxiliary vehicles.... A.k.a hybrids... smile

My take on thin versus thick oil debate : Hyundai Kia state 5W20 is preferred but also endorse 5W30 and 10W30 as ambiant temp conditions dictate or when towing , driving up hills " . That tells me that 5W20 is marginal in Kia / Hyundai engines except for benign conditions (i.e. a CAFE play ) therefore I prefer a 5W30 or 10W30 synthetic .

Why would you put 5w20 in an Avalanche in the first place?

Switched from 0w20 / 5w20 to 10w30 of low NoACK synthetic (PU at the moment) to reduce intake valve deposit and change it at 5k miles. I remember reading a study online from a Korean university / research org / manufacturer that their testing sees that group 4 base oil and reduced OCI help, as well as high engine load to burn it off the intake valve.

Prius is staying with 0w20 due to stop start engine, but will use M1EP at 10k miles OCI like The Critics does, to reduce probability of ring deposit related oil burn common on Prius.

Not really thin to thick but do have a reason for switch.
