I have used Shell Rotella 15W-40(or Delvac) in many of my other motorcycles. Bought my first super sport Yamaha R1.

Was wondering, should I use any 10W40(car specific) or stick to diesel 15W-40 oil? Or make my own blend of 20W40 with 10W40 or 15W40? Manual specify a wide range from SAE20W50SE to SAE10W30SE, based on temperatures and all.

For reference, I don't ride and drive like a maniac! :p

Thanks for all the help.

if you dont ride and drive like a maniac, why an R1? (just kidding...) it's a beautiful piece of machinery! I've fallen for the "motorcycle oil" marketing bug and MA specs. no need to blend up a 20w-40 for a Yammy; I use 20w-50 mid summer; and 10w-40 in the cooler seasons. Ok, right now I am running Amsoil 20w-40

I have a few acquaintances that use Amsoil 10w40 or Amsoil 20w50 in their R1 and GTS-1000. What does the factory call for ? I think 10w40.

I own 5 Yamaha R1's
2001 Champions edition (same generation as yours)
2002 (first fuel injected model)
2006 LE Model
2009 (first crossplane engine year)
2017 R1M

I run Mobil 1 15W-50 (car type) in all of them and my 12 other motorcycles.

Now you are right guy to ask many questions.

What kind of filter do you suggest? I'll get 15W50 M1 from Walmart.

BTW, how's 1st generation in terms of reliability and for many miles when compared to other R1's?

My 2001 has around 56,000 miles all put on by me since I purchased it new back then. It has been a reliable solid performer with zero issues in the 16 years I have owned it. I like Baldwin oil filters and the part # for your application would be B1400. I purchase them from a local Kenworth dealer.
