If your smart, you'll find a place that refills your tank while you wait so you'll get 20 pounds instead of 15 pounds Rhino gives you.
Most Uhaul company owned stores refill propane tanks cheaper and give you more propane to boot than Blue Rhino.

I exchange my 20 lb. tanks at Walmart for $14.something. The local propane dealer (who I'm a customer of) is close to $20 for the proper fill. I told him he's outrageous, even threatened to look around at other propane companies for my home and he didn't budge. He said he cannot make money filling small tanks any cheaper. I did the math, and I'm winning with the convenience of Walmart's exchange.

Yes, I could cart them into the city (a tool rental store has cheapest propane refills here), but I never remember. So Walmart they go, and I never have to worry about the tank, because I get a fresh, always-certified one every time. (so far, I always check the date stamp).

Tractor supply company is between 1.99 and 2.59/Gallon a 20lb tank is usually around 4.5 gallon
although I dont let them get empty.

I have one rhino tank for about a year it just expired so I have to exchange it.

I think sams club is around $14.

My other tank was new 2 years ago($29 at sams club) and it has a nice float type gas gauge on it.. works pretty good.

$14 = only 15 pounds
$20 = "proper" 20 pounds

Your local guy isn't ripping you off

These are quite popular in my area. People are too lazy to go to the propane refill place. Most don't realize they are getting 15lbs either.

Anyone who actually fills with 20lb of propane is an idiot and also is doing so illegally by law 80% is maximum full. Most 20lb tanks have a 47.6lb water capacity propane weighs .42x water weight so 47.6x0.42=19.995lb capacity of propane and at 80% fill 19.995x0.80=15.994lb of propane at a legal fill. 15.994lb+average of 17lb empt tank weight=~33lb so anyone with a tank that weighs upwards of 36-38lb should be worried about having the pressure safety valve pop and blow off gas.

Exchanges are good if you have an old tank and need to replace it.
However, I went to swapping tanks a couple of years ago.
To get a tank filled at my closest propane purveyor (Flying J), one must have their license plate number taken, fully explain the purpose for the purpose, and just generally play 20 questions. The last time I was there, I almost thought I was going to get a pat down.
Seems a little intrusive to me for cooking a few steaks or burgers.
Now, I just go to Menards or Rural King and swap. Cheaper and less drama.

I usually just go to BJs and they fill the tank. They charge by the gallon, can't remember exactly how much they put in, but I though it was closer to 18 pounds instead of 15 you'd get at the exchange.

As was mentioned in another post, you'll never get 20# in a 20# tank, there has to be room for expansion. The new tanks with the overfill protection valves (All you see nowadays) prevent you from filling past 18#, with a bit of variation depending on ambient temp. So right away, your math is flawed, and even if it wasn't I'd be spending about 5% more to exchange tanks, rather than waste 40 minutes of my time, making a special trip to get them filled.

When I said I did the math, I wasn't lying. I weighed the Wal-Mart exchange tank versus the refill (each minus their respective tare weight) and calculated actual cost per weight of propane. The exchange was near 5% less, without the time and headache.

There is a tool rental place known for cheap propane (1.99/gal or something stupid cheap) which is their gimmick to get contactor guys to go there and rent equipment. I've never been there as the $10 saved is not worth the drive and time spent getting there, and they aren't open on weekends which is always when I seem to remember that one or more tanks need refilled.

Propane is only $0.75 a Gallon

- MOST of us are getting ripped off pretty good ( or at least paying a 'kings ransom' for 'transportation' . . .)
- MOST people don't know this (which is why they 'get away' with it) - they're HAPPY to pay $4.50 a gallon for their 'exchange' . . .

That was was started my beef with the local propane distributor. I was paying just over a buck a gallon for my bulk tank at home, they still charge 4 and change per gallon on the small refills that customers bring in. Says he can't make any money charging less... I don't buy it.
