Thank you Garak, Glad someone understands what I am trying to explain even though the odds are not what most people would understand could happen. I am a long time reader of Bob is the Oil Guy and have seen you reply before. Thank you.

There is even https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere which might help some people.

People win the lottery somehow, such as the 1 in 292 million chance that just happened. I didn't buy a ticket. I wouldn't win. Anybody reading this has a higher chance of dying in a head on collision with traffic going to work Monday, it could be me but just like what happened to me I wouldn't bet on it.

Good advice from Garak.

I dismissed your comment at first because, quite frankly, that's not the way I was brought up - stiff upper lip and all. However, upon re-read I believe your comment was more an advisory than a cry for help.

As long as you keep your personal and financial information safe, move on and don't worry too much about the other stuff. Their problem not yours. Honesty and hard work trump everything else.

That's what I was thinking of, even though I couldn't remember the name. For email for those using webmail and concerned about privacy, I'd recommend Hushmail. They do have a free account setup. Of course, privacy is maximised if the other party is on Hushmail or using GPG integrated with their email, but if not, at least you're not letting Google target ads based on email content, and your ISP is as out of the loop as possible, with it being a secure connection and the email physically not on your ISP's servers.

Hushmail will require you to login fairly frequently if you use a free account, and won't give you the storage that Google will, but that's really not the point. It's simply another option, with more security.

Unfortunately, our technology companies are just like any other occupation. Sometimes people work there who perhaps shouldn't and take advantage. Some sleep on the job. Some steal pens. Some nose around other people's data. If we've had police officers up here sell database information to organized crime or people in health care using private patient data to hassle coworkers, it shouldn't surprise anyone that someone at their ISP making half the money might do something untoward on a slow night, even if it's reading emails.
