Vertical shaft engine in Husq riding mower circa 2001.

Starter just spins but does not engage engine. Once out of 50 tries it engaged and started the engine. But not today.

New starter or starter clutch or ??

If a clutch is it easy to replace?

My riding mower is not my focus these days, I need it to run with minimal time spent.

AMEN on only lightly lubing the starter shaft!!!!

When I first tore down & rebuilt my B&S starter I smeared a dab of light moly grease on the starter shaft. It was too much! I wiped it off and sprayed the shaft with some WD-40 and then it worked like new!

Try the grease first, but you may need a new starter. Common on those Briggs engines. Check ebay you can usually find one for $30-40.
