The variation is there are more than one 17-year cycles going on; the largest ine gets all the attention.

This isn't anything X-rated is it ?

That's it's own skin, not another cicada.

+1. Its the matured cicada coming out of its old exoskeleton.

I'm surprised yours are only coming out now; ours have been out for weeks!

That's not the 17 year, that's the annual one, comes out every summer. The 17 year cicada has beady little red eyes (& they're not green, they're more brown), and there's a WHOLE LOT MORE of them, & around here they come out in springtime.

Is that a Macro lens?
It's from my Motorola Droid Maxx cell phone. i was sitting on my John Deere with it running and the blades a spinning when I took them too. They didn't flinch a bit.

Here's my Cicada killer, the Tommy gun. I learned to hate Cicadas since I moved back to Arizona. As a kid growing up in Phoenix they weren't that bad, noisy but tolerable, but the ones up here are twice the size and the noise will make your ears ring. I make it my summer's work to rid them from the trees near my house.
