A little late to the party, but the key is to use 5w40 with the PD motors, as others have said. Many folks have used non-VW certified CJ-4 oils in 5w40 with great success such as Schaeffer, M1 TDT, Rotella T6. And the 505.01 in the 5w40 weight works great too.
507.00 may technically 'supercede' or be backwards compatible to 505.01 spec. But the problem is 507.00 only comes in 5w30. For anyone with a 2004-05 Passat TDI, your owner's manual is very clear that you should only use 505.01 certified oil in 5w40 weight. Your car came with 5w40, and 5w40 should be used across all temp ranges for normal driving. If engine oil viscosity grade SAE 5w40 is not available, then you can use SAE 5w30 for topping up. That's what your owners manual says.
There is a disconnect with VW dealerships and they think any VW 505.01 certified oil is fine for use in the BHW engine. The 5w30 version should only be used when 5w40 is not available, as your owner's manual states quite clearly. The 5w40 flavor of 505.01 has its own part number and is readily available at any VW dealership, so a VW dealership would never have any valid reason to put 5w30 in a BHW, whether it is 505.01 or 507.00 certified. The 505.01 in 5w40 carries VW part# G-052-167-M2.
I don't have a BEW or BRM to know what it says in the owners manuals of those vehicles, but I presume it is same/similar language. 5w30 is a cam toaster for the PD motors. Full stop.
