Help needed. Is the new VW oil 504.00 507.00 required in my 2015 Passat 2.0L TDI able to be used in my 2005 Passat TDI 2.0 L BHW camshaft driven injectors? I have used only VW 505.01 in my 2005 Passat BHW. I think they are different requirements. Different oil. Thanks for you help.

this should help, in short 507 oils superceed 505.01 oils

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=158788

this being said many of us tdi owners don't follow VW's oil recommendations because the PD engines eat their cams at an alarming rate using "VW recommended oil". ( i am not trying to start an oil war)

I have been using a qualtiy DINO 15w40 (CJ) and i have over 200k on my original cam, many of my friends on the tdi club had their cams die in the 80 k range (or even lower). My OCI is 6 months or 5000 miles.

Use VW 505.01 in PD TDI.
You have several options, but most handy is Valvoline 5W40 MST in NAPA> Sometimes they have it on sale for $3.99 a quart. I use it in BMW in summer months.

I wouldn't use a 5W-30 of any rating in a PD TDI. The VW 507.00 is an excellent oil for it's intended application but knowing the problems that the PD engines have I would use only a 5W-40 product.

As edyvw mentioned, the Valvoline that is available at every NAPA store would be a good option. I would be far more inclined to use the 505.01 in the common rail TDI than to use the 507.00 in the pumpe-düse.

VW 507.00 or 505.01 are both recommended by VW for PD engines.

You could possibly rationalise VW 507.00 for both cars, price aside.

They are both for PD engine...

505.01 is FULL saps version

507 is LOW saps version (for DPF catalyst)

505 01 has a maximum sulfated ash limit of 0.8%.

Got Good results in the late wife's 2005 Beetle TDi (1.9L) with the Pumpe Duese engine (camshaft driven unit injectors like your 2005 Passat), with Rotella T6 5W40. It's all about the oil having an HTHS value > 3.5 for that engine.

+1
...and it usually associates with ACEA C3.

History (and UOA) has shown that CJ-4 oils protect as good or better in PDs than any VW-spec oil. Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck, Shell Rotella T6, Schaeffer 9000 or Amsoil DEO are all fairly easy to get and protect well.

The CR engines got full roller valvetrains so the mega-HTHS, high moly, high ZDDP oils aren't needed.

The 2015 needs 507.00 for DPF protection; the 2005 needs CJ-4 for camshaft protection.

Nope.
VW 502.00=Full SAPS
VW505.01=Mid-SAPS
VW504/507=Low SAPS

Not quite.

502 00 is full SAPS (1.5% max)
505 01 is mid SAPS (0.8% max)
504 00/507 00 is a bit odd. The VW spec document says 1.5% max ash (so full SAPS). BUT, it also says that the oil must meet ACEA C3, which is 0.8% max ash, so mid SAPS. The outcome is that 504 00/507 00 = mid SAPS.

AFAIK there is no low SAPS VW spec (<0.5% ash).

Well, VW 504.00/507.00 is all ready old spec. if we will keep a track. it was considered low SAPS since to meet other parameters of VW504.00/507.00 oils could not have high levels of SAPS, hence most have around 0.6-0.7.
I know that spec. allows actually very high SAPS levels, but no oil has it since other parameters would not be achieved.

Yes, different engines so different oils.

For the common-rail 2015 Passat TDI, stick to the VAG 504/507 spec oils.

For the 2005 pumpe duse (PD) Passat TDI, the best oil is probably a 5w40 meeting the API CJ-4 or new CK-4 specification.

But if you want a single oil for both engines, then you should probably use the VAG 504/507 spec oil.
