Replaced leaking valve cover gasket and took the opportunity to snap you all a couple of pictures. Replaced plugs while in there, refilled with more Kendall... drive on.


 
Looks good....I'm assuming this is your Mazda6 2.3?....What OCI are you running that Kendall synthetic?
 
yeah it's the 08' 2.3. Ive had the car since 20,000 miles and it's been on 7500 mile oci ever since.
 
I remember reading about fleets doing tests and sticking with the same brand/type of oil is more important than anything else. Changing oil brands every interval causes more deposits, even with synthetics. You could've used the same brand of conventional oil @ 3-5K intervals and gotten the same clean results.
 
Never heard about that fleet test before. I'd love to look that up and see what their conclusions were. Do you remember what company, or what engine, or anything?

Cam lobs are excellent. The fleet tests were repeated by, I think, VOLVO and got the same results which was basically pick a good oil and stick with it. I wish I could find the actual paper. Ed

No published results, just internal tests from a huge fleet. It was mentioned here years ago from a reputable forum member. After testing, the fleet switched all vehicles to the same brand of oil.
The results didn't show any brand being superior or even if synthetics are superior, just that changing brands every interval resulted in more varnish/deposits.

It makes logical sense though, each brand of oil has slightly different add packs. While API standards mean you can mix different brands of oil without causing engine damage, it doesn't say anything about deposits/varnish.
 
If you shud not switch brands (yikes) how about all the folks blending oils.
I read it on bitog that switching brands every oil change keeps it clean. More discussion will be helpful.
 
I've always said that mixing finished oils is a fools hobby. Others delight in it, convinced that they have outsmarted the industry.

It's better to stick with one oil. The switching stuff up to keep it clean is opinion based and I have not seen any peer reviewed studies that support this notion. I have heard this regarding fuels as well.

I suppose it would be true if switching from an inferior fuel to top tier.

For oils... I'm very skeptical that changing brands would keep things cleaner.

I am in the one oil camp as well. Changing brands with different additive packages may or may not be counterproductive but there is something to be said when someone sticks to one brand and then shows pics of the engines interior. Tig1 has many times linked to pictures of engines running exclusively on M1 and they look spotless. That is a testimony to that oil.
 
I don't think it matters a whole lot about switching brands. Changing it in a good interval is really where the rubber hits the road in my opinion. I do respect those that stick to one product for the very long haul. Tig1 is a great example of doing this.
 
I think the argument was that new brands oil additive washes away the previous one so there is no build up.

And this was also based on fleet experience if memory serves me right.

Really? Granted I've used a predominance of Mobil 1 products in my cars (usually because they are the cheapest at Walmart), but over the past few years I have been changing around a lot especially in my ECHO and Accord. Should I be worried?
