I want to run a 5w40 oil in my new Chevy Colorado 2.8 DuraMax. Most Dexos2 oils are 5w30.

5w40 Dexos2/C3 oils include:

Redline Euro 5w40
Motul X-Clean 5w40
Castrol Euro 5w40

Is any one of these better than the others?

unlikely redline is a licensed dexos2 oil; important for warranty purposes

It is "suitable replacemnt" and "recommneded for"

I wold think they all would be quite good but as far as one better than another?? Perhaps Blackstone labs or Consumer Reports has done some oil analysis and testing on them. As long as they have the starburst symbol one is probably as good as another.

Why afraid of 5W-30?

A little extra weight for when towing. FCA's EcoDiesel had issues with C3 5w30. Not sure if the Baby DMax would have similar issues but why not go a little heavier just in case. Dexos2/C3 maintains the warranty.

All C3 oils will have same dynamic viscosity- SAE is irrelevant. FCA never had problems in Europe and they use not C3, but C2 -low HT-HS lubricants.

Amalie has a 5w40 dexos2

The Redline oil I mentioned is rated C2/C3

I use Valvoline 5W40 MST in summer months in my BMW. Works like a charm. Get it in NAPA when it is on sale. I bought 30 quarts last April for $3.99 per quart.
I like Valvoline because they are transparent with numbers, very smooth operation and carries all necessary specs: ACEA C3, BMW LL-04, MB 229.51, VW 505.01, Dexos 2.

That's a good price. I'm not to far from Colo springs, when does it normally go on sale ?

Nope, they all have the same 3.5 min, not the same HTHS...the 5W40s are typically about 0.2Cp above the 5W30s.

Currently having this in a Kia 2.0L NA Nu engine ..... happy with it.

Yeah.

It is interesting that this oil in 5W-40 grade Total do not distribute in USA, 5W-30 only.

.. that's a world of CAFE.
If only Total produces and distributes xW20 ...sales would improve.

I think every three months they have some sale on Valvoline. Check on napaonline.com.
I know they do not have August sale as I checked few days ago.

It has an impressive list of OEM approvals.

Not more approvals then Valvoline 5W40 MST, Castrol TD or similar oils.
I am not impressed with X-clean at all. HTHS is 3.64, which is almost 5W30 category. Mobil1 5W30 ESP has HTHS of 3.58.
X-Clean is fairly thick 5W40 and has pretty weak HTHS for such cst.
