I have often wondered how many quarts of oil does a Formula one car hold in the sump? Anyone here know?

That seems like a very small amount. My guess is that is what's flowing through the engine at any given time. That is under 4 quarts.

That is the same amount as for my 1.4CVVT

And hyundai says it is GTG for 20.000km...

would disagree, the article is a little dated. in the last couple years engines have bexome compatitively really reliable.
only honda is making really bad engines, lol.
every few races, tv commentators mention the modern reliabilty (usually in the context of honda unreliabilty).
I dont have stats but it seems like crashes and damage cause more retirements than engine failure now, esp. if you dont include honda

additionally the few engine related failures usually are muxh more conplex and more with complexities with electronics and electric turbo or battery, rather than an oil related full kablamos, which were more common say 10years ago.

You might be right. This is what google found for me.

3 liters of oil is nothing. My 5.7 HEMI V-8 in my Jeep Grand Cherokee takes 7-1/2 quarts. That's almost 2 gallons. And it turns 1,500 RPM in 8th gear at 60 MPH. F1 cars turn 15,000 RPM like it's nothing.

Same thing for my Mitsu 4G15T...3L, 20000Km on a turbo engine.

I wonder what is the % of oil related engine failure in F1

Extra oil = Extra weight. Not at all surprised that they have minimal sumps.

Bet they're running 0W-16 oil.

Nahh. GDI turbo engines require 5w30. Just check the Ford Ecoboost threads...
