My Dad had old style welding helmets for his Lincoln 225 amp stick welder, both probably 1970 vintage.

Can I assume that for stick welding they are #14? I looked but did see any markings.

I have 2 and someone is looking to borrow them for the eclipse.

They're not too dark? The ones I've used were way too dark to see an eclipse.

Better too dark than not dark enough. We are going to see a lot of eye problems in the US come next fall and after.

The shade could have been changed at any time, and likely has.

Look on the shade lens for a number, it'll be pretty small.
You may have to take it put of the helmet, since it's on the edge.

#14 is too dark, IMHO.

I use a shade 11 for stick welding. And I have to have a 4-1/2" x 5-1/4" big window hood.

I get claustrophobic in those small window hoods that some guys use.

The filter lens should have a rating etched somewhere around the rim. Stick welding generates a smoke screen so the filter doesn't need to be as dark as with TIG which uses a clear shielding gas.

I would guess and say that the standard that came with arc welders was a #10.

Yeah, most shipped with #10. Dark, but depending on where you are on the day of the eclipse, (say 70% area ...), should be OK. If they will be in 100% area, it may be too dark ...
