Could high mileage 10w40 be used in place of hdeo 15w40?

It seems like HM oil has stuff in it like hdeo does...

I'm asking because several people have asked me this question in regards to diesel application and also heavy duty gas stuff. (Off road toys or boats )

Id like to hear what you all feel.

Good question!

I don't know if all the pertinent data to make an "educated guess" is available to the public.

10W-40 has had some problems in the past with shearing that 15W-40 typically doesn't suffer from.

The question should be 15W40 HDEO instead of 10W40 HM. Motorcycle 10w40 when on sale is a good compromise.

Only when cold temp comes into play is it a question for me. Otherwise always HDEO get my vote.

+1

Zeng has clearly identified the distinction.

I need to clarify.

People are buying HM 10w40 to use in place of 15w40.

HDEO has additives to keep soot in suspension and very good base stocks.

10W-40HM may have good base stocks (or a ton of VII's ...

) and has nothing for soot. OK in a gasser, not good in a diesel ...

In a gas engine or in a diesel?

It meets A3/B3 so it would work ok in some light diesels. For anything really requiring HDEO CG-4 to CI-4+ it would probably be OK for a short interval but why would you?

If you need the cold-weather performance of a 10W; there ARE a few 10W-40 HDEO's out there.

Petro-Canada makes most of them.
