Thank you for posting this. The Navy flew these to do the job I do well before my time. I'd love to go fly in one. Lockheed built and continues to build fantastic aircraft.

You're welcome! The P3s were/are fantastic firefighting planes as well; maybe the best at what they did. I enjoy them all. It's cool to see planes built for one specific purpose transformed into an entirely different purpose, and excel at the latter.

I served in VP-11 from 3-64 to 6-67 and we flew the P2V Neptune. I was a a jet mech but spent many hours wrenching on the R-3350 radials. The jets were the J-34. I did fly on CAC 11 for nearly 2 years as 2nd mech and spent many hours in the jump seat between and aft of the pilots. My job was to watch the fuel load and transfer fuel from tank to tank when needed. Also monitor the engines and fire up the jets when the pilot wanted them. We spent many hours flying out of Brunswick, Me. over the north Atlantic, Caribbean, and the Med while on deployment. Great adventure for a 21 year old kid. This is a pic of us on patrol in the Med in 1966. Tail number 147962.

Stupid question, but wouldn't a prop plane have a better ability to do those "tight and slow" maneuvers than a jet aircraft?

Or is the increased capacity and flaps pretty much negating the whole situation?

The jets they use now like the BAE146 that are replacing the P2Vs are very maneuverable in full flap drop configuration. I think they can actually fly slower and they have more power and climb out. Heck, the DC10 tankers are quite maneuverable!
