The South Island really got slammed by that one, they are normally sheltered from such weather by the Southern alps, but this low travelled down the east coast, dragging wet air from the tropics to dump on them. We've just delt with a system from the Southern Ocean, now one from the tropics. Farmers feel they've dodged a bullet, lambing and calving start soon, and mid winter there are not many crops in the ground. Not too bad here, just some serious rain - rode my scooter to work on friday, got off and the heavens opened...then just before I left work it slowed down. Drove the Volvo through our flooded road yesterday, but no problems here.

This has been a really wet year, flooding everywhere, places that have never seen that much rain before. We are still paying high prices for veges as crops were wiped out a few months ago...lettuce etc still grown outside here, no hot houses. Locally, farmers can't sow their grass crop - after the maize is harvested they put in grass to make silage in the spring - they can't get the tractors on the padocks, it's just too wet. Always moaning, next will come a drought.
