Just wondering what is in today's STP oil treatment? Is it the same formula from years past? I recall my father putting in a blue can of STP years ago in his Ford 429 cid powered station wagon before towing his 6,000 pound camper back in the early 1970's.

I think it's just viscosity improvers and a tiny bit of ZDDP.

It used to have a lot of zinc, and made a fair assembly lube. Not any more.

My Dad loved the stuff. Dumped in it everything. Bought it by the gallon. Never caused problems but I never thought it was a good idea dumping a thick goo in the motor.
Thought it would end up in the bottom of the pan.

Which one?

I see three versions at WallyWorld, O'Reilley's, and Advance.

Send in a sample to Blackstone and see what elements it has in it.

It used to be mostly a very poor version of an OCP VII and thickeners.

What is your criteria for knowing it works well for OPE?

Perhaps as a fuel stabilizer?

It might be 'just the opposite'

I bought some a few months ago to see if it would reduce my oil consumption.

I built one engine about 30 years ago and seemed to think it was a grey gooey additive when i used it 50/50 with oil as an assembly lube.

When I opened the blue bottle it was honey color and poured much faster; I'm thinking it is a ZDDP additive now.
