I'm sure the anti-Chinese posters will be all over my post, but so be it. If this helps someone get their zero turn mower back into use, especially one that had a Kohler Courage, so be it.

Harbor Freight Predator 22 HP (708 CC) V-Twin vertical shaft engine. Comes with fuel pump, oil filter and muffler. Used in lawn mowers and generators, so no fuel tank is included.

https://www.harborfreight.com/engines-ge...-epa-62879.html

This is item # 62879. It is normally priced at $699.99. There is a coupon for this in the April 2017 "The Progressive Farmer" magazine that brings this down to $549.99. (I haven't seen this coupon anywhere else, but I really haven't looked either) Don't try to buy this with one of their 20% off or 25% off coupons as the Predator line is excluded.
You can type in the coupon code of 18613073 into the code entry on your online order form that brings this engine down to $549.99. Or use that code if you order by telephone. Shipping by FedEx to your door is $6.99, at least to the 48. All that will be added to your order will be sales tax, if applicable.
Another note: There is only a 90 day warranty on this engine, so you might consider getting the extended warranty, it's up to you.
Just one more thing: This coupon expires on 08/01/17, just a few days from now.

A big V-twin vertical from HarbFreight??

Never heard of it until now.

I have had great luck with their recent engines.
The old "Greyhounds" had really, really REALLY bad rubber formulations.

Honest question: wouldn't it make sense to repair your engine, buy a used engine, or buy a whole used implement, something like that? What scenario would it be best to buy a crate motor for a lawnmower?

I'm guessing it's cheaper then buying a new factory motor, for an old piece of yard equipment. It might even be more powerful then the original.,,

I'm sure it's cheaper than a factory engine, but, like I asked... is it better than a repair? Is it better than a used motor? Is it better than a used piece of equipment?

Well, to answer a question..or two..or three of yours, I'll add my $.02 worth. Yes, I did buy one and it arrived on my door step today. Was it worth $699? Not in my book. But I felt it was worth the selling price of $550. Why did I purchase it? A local guy on Craigslist advertised (and I then purchased) a 2011 Toro 52" TimeCutter for cheap. Matter-of-fact, it was real cheap. The original engine in this Toro was a Kohler Courage engine. The engine in this mower had a hole in the block and it wasn't from running it low on oil. The Kohler Courage has a very bad reputation for doing that and there is no way I would put another Courage engine in it. Kohler sells a short block Courage engine for more then the HF 22 vertical, but then you still have to use old parts to get it running. Will this turn out to be a reliable engine for me? I don't know, but I intend to find out.
As I said in my original post, if this HF engine bothers you, don't buy it.

People swap them into really old 30 and 40 year old lawn tractors. Originally, they came with 8 or 10 hp motors, so it's a real step up in power and modernization if it will fit and you can fabricate everything to work.

The novices would say "why would you fix a 40 year old lawn tractor instead of buying a new one" and the guys that know, know. Those old lawn tractors were built like tanks and would take $8000 or more to buy something similar today.

The clearance engines can be amazing deals.

I got the H.F. "predator" 301cc (9hp? 11 hp?) for only $99 when someone brought it back.

It now resides in my "ancient" Bolens 1250 (which is built like a tank)

Considering newer lawn tractors are built with the thinnest, cheapest, weakest parts possible, it's almost always better to fix the old one if possible. My I-beam mounted tow behind log splitter has been doing fine with its' 13 HP HF Predator, the original flathead Briggs would have taken twice as much money to rebuild, THREE times as much to replace (with a Chinese made Briggs engine). The Chonda is a better, more efficient engine anyway.

I've seen these in my local HF store, think they are called Predators?

What's the warranty and where would you take it for warranty?

Where do you get parts?

That's the kind of example I was hoping for. Thanks

I've heard a lot of horror stories about the Kohler Courage.
Of course 40 yrs ago Kohler was the gold standard of OPE.
I suspect it's another case of MBAs taking charge of the technical side of things.

I've run a 99 dollar Predator on a kart, it's quite an impressive piece of manufacturing in my book, figuring that both HF and the Chinese supplier are both making a profit plus shipping it to the US. Will be interesting to see how well their V-engine does.

Chinese quality is all over the map, but there definitely are companies there that can do manufacturing properly.

Yes, they are called Predators.
The 22 HP vertical that I purchased has a 90 day warranty. Yes, that is pathetic, but they do offer an extended warranty for an extra amount. (I ordered online, so I didn't have a salesperson pressuring me into one. I'm not sure what the extended warranty costs) Warranty is handled by each store.
Most of the Predator engines are Honda clones, or Chondas. I'm not sure what this 22 HP engine is cloned from, but an operators/parts/wiring manual comes with this engine and individual parts are available from Harbor Freight. Years ago, I've heard stories of unavailable parts from Harbor Freight, but I think that situation has improved.
