This is the first in-car video of the new Red Bull Holden/Triple Eight next gen. Commodore.

No V8... now a twin-turbo V6. I was ready to be disappointed by the sound... but I wasn't. It's no wild V8, but it's not a flat, droning V6 either :)cough: Formula 1 :cough:). Different, but not what I'd call bad.
 
I went to Bathurst in 2016, was awesome, I said it was important I go this race, it would be the last year an Australian derived commodore V8 competes and I guess I was right. End of an era.

Sounds like a fun fun fun car, but the dude driving is ASLEEP, give it to the Stig!

Craig Lowndes is an awesome driver. Think about as big to V8 Supercars as Jeff Gordon is/was to NASCAR.

I don't think that was a track they race on. A few tracks are pretty short. I saw them at COTA in 2013 and they are awesome in person. Was happy to get to see them.
 
Sounds good, i'm really looking forward to the variety we'll see next year. We've had the V8 category since 1993, its about time for a change.
 
It was a shame when they changed the rules to mandate the V8 format, but it was inevitable as the foreign imports kept running rings around the local family sedans. Holden and ford couldn't compete against real performance vehicles, so they regulated it to kill off the competition. Hopefully we might start to see some genuine competition back, but rest assured if Holden and ford start Getting whipped again they'll change the rules to make sure they get in the game.
 
I agree Brad, I loved the Group C Touring Car days, with the wild flares and spoilers, where there were Falcons, Commodores, Camaros, BMW's, Mazda RX7s, Nissan Bluebirds, Geminis, Escorts, Celicas...then we moved into the turbo era, with the Sierras dominating, and then of course the mighty Godzilla. There was no way the Aussie V8s could match this beast, so as you say, they changed the rules to kill it off. The championship these days is a mere shadow of its former self.
 
Yes, I miss the days when everything was out there racing, the Walkinsaw Jags, Sierras and Skylines...pity they pulled the plug and made it a two car race. Still, I watched it live on TV for many years, but now Sky have killed live to air sport. I can stream if it's a race I want to watch, but these days just don't bother. Pity as it seems it's a Kiwi drivers series this year.

You should've said...you drove through my town and past my power stations to get there.

My recollection of the events leading up to it...
* yep, Group C was awesome
* Group A had things like the Brock 05 Commondore versus the M3, with some great battles.
* Yes, the Sierras and Godzilla trounced the locals...
* They were contemplating a 2 or 2.5 litre formula.
* while they were leaning towards the latter, Ford complained that their street block couldn't cut it against the 2.5, and asked for NASCAR equivalent stuff...and got it.
* Holden saw that, and sooked that they had no NASCAR equivalent, so asked to Run Chev...and got it.
* They dropped the 2.0 or 2.5 and left it at V-8s.
* Larry took advantage of the rules, and with the stock block holden, managed to run silde throttle bodies and all sorts of stuff against the NASCAR ford/chev competition..and won.
* to which the Ford and Chevden teams sooked about it being unfair.

Then COTY, and the overseas teams...

We will NEVER get back to the glory days, and I'd never want the drivers to be exposed to the risks that they were back then either.

Looking forward to this next change...I'm over the past and missing the M3/Commodore/Brock getting slicks on a couple laps from the end of a wet race.

1990 commodore beat the GTR's and the ford sierras blew up. For a history lesson.

Group A format costs were getting out of control, the Brits changed the rules that ended Group A, so why would Australia support a racing class no longer existed? Japan and Germany started their own racing series, Group A was done.

V8 class was the best marketing proposition to date thousands go to the races and thousands watch. Look how it expanded from Australia to New Zealand to Abu Dhabi to Texas.
