The act of preventative maintenance, in and of itself, is FAR MORE important than brand/grade/base choices among lubes and filters.
- under maintaining something is akin to abuse/neglect; that can kill equipment by shortening the lifespan
- over maintaining something has never been proven to be anything but a waste of time and money

What I learned in stats was that a population's information can generally achieve a statistically significant result as n reaches and exceeds 30

too many cars and oil combinations to list in 150 characters or less

Yes - that is the generally accepted lower limit for a sample set. 50 samples is a good place to gain a bit more integrity, and frankly getting more than 50 samples won't greatly increase the accuracy. Nothing wrong with having more than 50; it can refine the data further. But the law of diminishing returns applies here. If the data collection is easy to get and process, using more is a fine idea. But if the data collection is expensive in time/money, it becomes an expense not worthy of the efforts, as you're not gaining accuracy at the same rate as the expenditures to collect and process it. You can see that it's practially convergent at 100 samples; taking more isn't really getting more.

When I review UOA data from Blackstone, they send me heaps of data in files already easily tabulated. So having 500 or more UOAs for one engine series costs me nothing, and whether I process 50 or 500 it still takes the same effort regardless of the quantity.
