Hi all,

A little behind the 8-ball here. My beloved RT6 as you probably know has switched formulations as of beginning of the year. Is this oil still safe to run in my EJ255 post-change?

TIA

This is just my opinion but based on fairly extensive research, I have not found any downside to switching to the new CK-4/SN formulation in your WRX.

I look forward to the next year as various vehicles begin submitting UOAs on these new API formulations.

Thanks. I slapped it in my car 2,500 miles ago without realizing it was a new formulation. Should have a UOA up in here in the next month or two when I hit my 4k mile interval.

I should have asked if you are using T6 10w30 or 5w40.

I recall there was some concern the T6 in CJ-4 had a high NOACK value...it caused some bickering in a Subaru site for EJ engines.

Do you remember that a couple years ago?

Hopefully someone more experienced will chime in.

I have always used 5W-40 and have had great blackstone UOAs

There's no such thing as a "CK-4/SN" formulation; it's CK-4 only, with no gas engine approval.

You can also check the current API licensing info and see the only Rotella CK-4/SN product remains Multi-Vehicle 5w-30.

Darn,
Thank you for your correction...I was careless.
It is too high in Phosphorus and Zinc to meet SN limits but Wikipedia had shown the CJ-4 as SM also.

Have you considered switching over to the very similar and arguably slightly better M1 turbo diesel truck oil? it is 5w40, it is CK-4 AND SN approved unlike the current RT6 formula that lost its dual rating. A couple of us on these forums picked up a bunch when walmart had them for 15 a gallon, I will be using it in my truck very soon.

This is my 2 cents. I also have a WRX 2014 and use T6 and this is what I have put together in the past 9 months. I have read tons of the T6 threads and seen UAO and VOA since the new formula has come out. And it seems to me that shell didn't want to change the formula enough to keep the SM rating on the 5W-40 oil. They have a new product T6 5W-30 that will have the CK-4/SM rating. The latter oil I have not seen yet, the Shell website says the 5W-30 is HD oil but if it is then it won't be Energy Conserving. I'm sure it is Energy Conserving but haven't seen the back of the bottle yet.

I think the T6 5W-40 is pretty much the same oil just no SM rating.

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.
