Take this for example a 1994 car that originally spec 20w50.
With the advancement of oil would you all run a new API SN 10w30 oil in that car or continue with 20w50?

Run an API SN 20W-50.

Possibly to use the same oil for both his cars ?

I've run a 79 motorcycle engine designed for 20W50 on 5W40 for the last 10 years.

Yeah just a question, because on my quest for oil, 10w30 can be obtained a lot cheaper....but im not gonna loose engine protection, if i need to run 20w50 or 10w40 i will.

I have also read (here if i may say so) that most cars dont need 20w50 as oil have advanced, but if my car manual spec 20w50 for my climate(back in 1994) would you all still run 10w30?

Run 10W-30 and see what your oil pressure does

I personally would, but my cars are not subjected to use that a 20w50 would be beneficial. And I have a thing for syn 10w30s *cough*mono*cough*grade*cough*

What engine are we talking about, and what does the owners manual say about oil?

I personally wouldn't worry at all about running a 10w30 when spec'd for 20w50....

BUT if this is just a matter of wanting to run one oil in both cars then why not try a euro or HDEO 0w40 or 5w40 and be very happy that both of your vehicles have a top of the line oil.

What engine and what type of 30 grade oil ?
Is it an ILSAC 10W30 with a HTHS of about 3.0 cP or a Euro / HDEO 10W30 with a HTHS of about 3.5 cP ? They are two very different 10W30 oils.

Have you considered at mixed fleet HDEO like Rotella, Rimula, Delo, Delvac in 15W40 they should be everywhere and at a decent price.

We also get very well priced 15W40 mineral oil for cars like Castrol GTX 15W40 and Shell HX5 15W40 that are rated API SN and Euro ACEA A3/B3 which have a HTHS of around 4.0 cP. I would try a 15W40 first and see how that goes.

Is this hypothetical? most cars 20 years ago had a big chart of temps and recommended oils.

Someone here ran PP 0w20 in an older Benz E430 V8, and engine was much quieter (and better mpg) than on the thicker EURO-spec oil that is recommended for that engine.

Try some Supertech dexos 5w-20. If you launch a rod through the hood then it was a bad idea.

On a serious note, try M1 HM 10w-30. Basically a thin 40, good additive package and can be had at Walmart.

yes, THIS. Because I doubt any car, even 20 years ago required a heavy hitter like 20w-50. Was within range? Sure. Required that only? no. This sounds like a trolling post against thin oils.

Run 10w-30 and forget about it. Oh, you have winter? 5w-30. End of Story.

I'm tired of people demonizing xw-20 oils.
