In Australia, Mobil 1 has always been around, but relatively more expensive and sometimes not so easy to find.

This has changed recently, I'm seeing a lot more M1 in the shops and a much greater diversity of M1 products. They have just recently started offering real sale prices too. I picked some up at half price last week, the first time ever at an affordable price.

It was the regular M1 5W-30, called "Newer Vehicle Formula" here in Oz. Now according to the Australian web page this Oz M1 5W30 is rated ACEA A1/B1, as well as the usual API SN, ILSAC GF-5, Honda HTO-06 and GM dexos1. Now, from the USA web page the regular M1 5W-30 is not rated A1/B1. The local Australian bottle of M1 5W30 is also clearly labeled A1/B1 on the back.

Do you think it's a different formulation or slack labeling ?

BTW in Oz we still have the older M1 0W40 oil with the higher HTHS and the BMW LL-01 spec.

Great !
Thanks I missed that, yes the USA M1 is also A1/B1, so it's probably the same stuff.

Might be the same formula. What I like about Australia is the 50 oils

2014 NISSAN VERSA 5spd M/T- M1 EP 5w30 and M1 EP Filter. 5k OCI.
2011 CHEVY IMPALA 3.5ltrs - M1 HM 5w30 and M1 EP Filter. 3k OCI.

Well out with the old and in with the new.

Vehicle: GM / Holden / Opel Astra (AH)

Interval:
Oil - 6 months / 5000 miles / 8000 KM
Filter - 9 months / 7500 miles / 12000 KM

Out: Valvoline SynPower 0W40 (SN, A3/B4) and a Valvoline synblend media filter
In: M1 5W30 and Repco Z154 filter

My very first M1 oil and my first ILSAC oil.

Being a thick oil guy, safety glasses and ear plugs when starting the car for the first time. But not required and the engine did not grenade on me.

I would think it's the same, as only one dexos1 license shows up for it, and shows globally for M1 5w-30.

I tend to go for the DEXOS2 spec, has +3.5HTST and covers all DEXOS1 requirements.

That said, M1 has an excellent global reputation. Just too expensive for me in Aus ($100/5L...)

They had it for half price, $50 for 5L, so I decided to see what all the fuss was about. It does seem like a nice oil so far.

Yes only one dexos licence number shows up for both, so I'm fairly sure it's all the same stuff.

Here is the PQIA VOA,
http://www.pqiamerica.com/March2013PCMO/mobil1.htm

The measured viscosity nicely matches the spec sheet. The VOA gives a TBN of 9.7 with a Noack of 10.1 plus 821 ppm zinc with 108 ppm Boron and 85 ppm Moly. All up, a nice brew.

My car is MPI not DI so the detergent mix of 1160 Ca and 770 Mg (ppm) is nice, but not essential for me.

The HTHS of 3.1 cP is the lowest I have ever used. But should be fine for a 4-cylinder family car.

The car OM says to use an A3/B3 or A3/B4 oil, as either a 15W40 or a 10W30, so I'm living life on the edge here.

Geeze, that stuff is expensive down there. Mobil 1 seems to be getting more sales up here, at least more than I remember historically. Maybe it's going to be a global strategy. Being the most expensive stuff on the shelf can't be too helpful.
