Oil wt for a 2012 MB C300

For the time being I am driving my grand daughter's C300 V6, and was wondering what wt of M1 does this car call for? Nothing is on the oil cap, which is a mistake. Thanks for the input.

It's not a mistake. MB doesn't call for any one specific grade of oil. It calls for an oil meeting MB 229.5 spec, and as such it could be 0w-30, 5w-30, 0w-40, 5w-40, etc.

The spec is key. The grade is secondary.
 
Gas or diesel?

Not sure you need to run 229.5X in a gasoline car, but I only own MB diesels.

Would love to hear why if they spec low sp ash oil for a gas auto.

Maybe I mixed my saps!

Thought the DPF vehicles needed low saps for the DPF longevity.

229.51 is mid-saps, 229.52 is low-saps
 
I don't recall saps being different between 229.51 and 229.52

I was in a thread here Ill try to find.

- just went back the oxidation spec is the only diff between these 2.

MB 229.52
Oils meeting this specifications must have lower ash content, at least 1% better fuel economy compared to the requirements of MB 229.31 and MB 229.51 and better oxidation stability for biofuel compatibility. Can also be used where an MB 229.31 or an MB 229.51 oil is required. Just like MB 229.5 and MB 229.51 this spec requires a long life oil.
 
There is a big gap between 229.31 and the .5X's

Both 229.51 and 229.52 have the same sulphated ash limit (0.8 max).

Quattro Pete has done pretty good research on this here, but love to see your link.

I have two vehicle that call for 229.52 and its a royal pain to find.

Thanks Pete, Im getting confused on which direction of 229.5X is high and which is low

Things like Mercedes Webpage say things like this. "229.52 Low SPAsh multigrade service engine oils (Specification 229.52)"

BTW that list is a running joke to the guys on the sprinter forum- just try finding those oils in North America.

Lubrizol performance comparison tool is good for these kinds of mfg spec comparison purposes.
 
There were several questions and statement going on in the thread at once and I usually work multiple threads & lost myself for a bit.

I actually quoted you before realizing you were participating further up in the thread.
