My brother and his wife both have 2007 Accord 2.4's. She the sedan, and he the coupe. Mine,a 2012 2.4 coupe. What differences do these two engines have? The 2007 holds 4.4 quarts and the 2012 holds 4.2 quarts according to the manual. How much better is a 0W20 over a 5W20? Better base stocks? Better add pack? I looked at the Pennzoil's pds and PP 0W20 is slightly thicker than PP 5W20 at operating temp.

The 2007 manual:

The 2012 manual:

Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 paired with a Fram Ultra XG7317 and your Accord will be very happy! Don't fear 0w20, it will protect your engine well even in the Texas heat. Make sure to check oil frequently to watch the level, once the oil runs low on these K24's they tend to become oil burners.

Weird the 1999-2000 Accord says to use 5W30 and that 5W20 is "acceptable". Then in 2001-2010 it says to use 5W20 and that 0W20 is "acceptable". Then in 2011 only 0W20 is recommended. Were their changes made in the engines between 1999-2013? If the engines are all the same basically, which is best haha. 5W30 at the one end of the spectrum, and then 0W30 at the other end of the spectrum. My car still has the dealer fill, whatever that may be!

I changed the dealer fill and filter shortly after purchase. No telling what junk they put in, the filter was some cheep Purolater clone jobber filter.

I guess I lucked out haha,I bought mine from a Honda dealership here and it has a Honda OEM oil filter on it. I wonder if they actually put 0W20 synthetic in it? Only had one owner, meticulously maintained there at the Honda dealership,I have all the service records.

The '98-'02 generation had an entirely different engine, one of 2.3 liters with timing belt driven OHC.
The two generations spanning '03-'12 use a 2.4 liter engine with chain driven OHC.
The '99 we bought new called for 5W-30 and 10W-30 was also recommended for temps above 20F.
Realistically, you could use either a 5W-20 or 0W-20 in your car.
As noted above, a 10W-30 would probably work just fine in TX and would offer the benefit of potentially lower volatility as well as potentially lower VI treat rates.

FWIW
My 2005 Accord 2.4L
approx oil use:
0 - 101 K miles Castrol 5-20 blend
101 - 200 K miles PP 5-30
200 - present QSUD 5-30 winter, 10-30 summer

Some of the oil I purchased at AZ clearance was 10-30 so I figured I use it in this application.
Car uses no noticeable oil until 5K miles. Then from 5K to the max I've run of 8500 K miles it will slug a full quart.
It is significantly the quietest on QSUD 10-30

Lately most Honda dealers use Honda labeled 0w20 syn-blend oil. Which is what the MM system is based on.

Also, I don't believe gregk24 bought the Accord from a Honda dealer which would explain the oil filter used. The nice thing about buying a used Honda from a dealer is that they usually use oem parts/fluids to prep it for sale.

I have been using 5W-20 since I purchased my Accord last year. It does seem to burn quite a bit (not surprising, given the mileage), so I plan to try a 5W-30 or 10W-30 on my next oil change. But to answer your question, the K24 was back-specified to allow 0W-20 instead of the 5W-20 it initially called for. As far as I know, there were no changes to this engine, aside from the 2.4 found in some Acuras that called for 5W-30, until they went to direct injection around 2013 or 2014.

Basically the same engine as the 06-11 Civic Si, and that car calls for 5W30.

Here at Acura, our 5W20 is semi-synth, our 0W20 is full-synth, so here, would be better off using the 0W20. I believe this is a Canadian thing, in the US they use semi-synth 0W20.

Just use either weight, and change it more than the OLM calls for IMHO.

Hello! Given your experience do you know what starts off the oil burning in these engines (06-11 Civic & Accord) ?
Do these engines any rings coking tendency , specially if using the lower viscosity oils?
Finally to the key question, you say 5W20 is ok and 0W20 is better... while are you using 0W-40 oil in your excellent Civic'10... so is the 0W40 even better than the 0W20 ?

Thanks for your inputs
