Autozone has NanoProMT 75W-90 Synthetic Gear oil for $5/qt in-store.

Never used this brand, there's not much information online about this stuff online, and the product info is typical of some boutique oils that are annoyingly uninformative. But as with the Castrol recently, $5/qt for synthetic LSD GL-5 is a good price.
Quote:
NANO ProMT Synthetic Gear Oil is a Military Tough/Race Ready, extreme pressure gear lubricant engineered with synthetic base stocks and “NANO” technology additives which provide superior performance compared to leading brands. NANO Gear Oils are formulated to provide extreme pressure protection, extreme load carrying capacity, high performance corrosion protection, and superior thermal stability. All with an anti-foaming quality to increase performance.

"“NANO” technology", not to be confused with nanotechnology. wink

Looks like any other wannabe product that in reality has nothing special to offer. Lacking on any specifics but long on nonsense:

"by up to"
"by up to"
"Up to"
"up to"
"Up to"
"Up to"
"Up to"

And like you point out, invoke the buzzword of the day, nano. What exactly does "Military tough" mean? And "Race Ready"? I'm "Race Ready" too. Would I do a good job in a race? Definitely not. But I'm Race Ready.

I wouldn't let that get anywhere near any of my vehicles. If you can't dazzle with brilliance, baffle with... well you know.

I know nothing about this personally. Still, all those words make me wonder. Usually military grade items actually cite the mil spec number to brag. Race ready, who knows what that means. Sounds a tad like a Chinese translation possibly. It all reminds me of that old ad featuring The over the top Isuzu rep Joe Isuzu. Trunk space bigger than the Grand Canyon ect...🤥.
It's still probably perfectly good oil for general use and whatever but something tells me it's not going to be used in the space program or anything like that anytime soon.

It seems the marketing department for this company decided on the exact opposite plan. This doesn't even advertise API GL-5 compatibility anywhere, not even on the bottle.
Before pouring it into my Volvo's diff, I'm tempted to call that 844 number and waste their time asking the mundane question of "Is this GL-5?"

Also they do namedrop "nanotechnology" on the bottle. eek
That "nanotechnology" description sounds like the EP functionality of your bog standard gear oil, through the lens of "Nano" marketing. laugh

probably junk.

Called the company and left a message with their technical support guy. He called me back and said he was on travel but did give me a verbal that it met GL-5 specification. He is suppose to send me documentation to this effect but it may be a few days before I get that. I will share if anything I receive.

In talking with their tech rep, they seem really geared towards defense applications.

Awesome, Hootbro. I had little doubt that it would at least be GL-5, but thank you for taking the time to get confirmation. Looking forward to their followup.

Man, I wouldn't trust a verbal on that one but you are free to do so I suppose. I mean come on, they manage to print all that nonsense on the PDS but somehow forget to print the one thing that might actually mean something?

I'd go with something from Walmart that actually has GL-4 or GL-5 way faster than believing some phone rep from some company that would put out a worthless PDS like the one they have. But it is "compatible with synthetics" and has "Performance Guaranteed" so maybe that's all that's really necessary. What's really dumb about their claims is that they say it is "up to" better but they don't say what it is being compared against. It could be compared to dry sand for all we know. Or, maybe compared to no oil at all.

Always be careful when someone makes a claim like "Military Tested" as they do on their bottle. Notice it doesn't say it was subsequently accepted by the military for anything. Testing has two outcomes, success and failure. Just to say it was tested (for anything) means nothing.

..........

Since I actually talked to somebody there, here is my 2 cents and impression. First of all, I work for a major DOD military contractor manufacturing concern in aviation. I called and emailed from both my company phone and company email account asking for information. They guy I talked to was prompt to call me back and is defiantly "in the know" when it comes to working in that environment. I request specifications and ceritifications from vendors all the time in my day job. I know a bullsh!tter when I hear one. There was no [censored] flim-flam answers when I asked the question and was told it met GL-5. Guy is on corporate travel so I will give him the benefit of the doubt until I get more info.

In looking over the company and their product page, yeah it is over the top with military jargon hyperbole but that is not uncommon with niche companies that work with the military and the military contract manufacturing community. If I was to guess, my speculation is their turn to market with general public consumers, they missed the boat in ensuring proper packaging labeling and specification identification.

I am just not yet to throw them under the bus as of right now and will give them reasonable time to get me that information which I will share when/if received.

Finally got a reply back for info and it is a mixed bag. Only received information on their additive supplier and nothing on their final product meeting the GL-5 specification as formulated and sold.

http://www.aftonchemical.com/Afton/media...DS.pdf?ext=.pdf

Until more is known, I would not used the stuff if warranty concerns are a issue.

I wouldn't use it warranty or no warranty. Any company that is this silly in their documentation should be thrown under the bus with no hesitation and no looking back. There are lots of legitimate alternatives available that don't just print paragraph after paragraph of meaningless jargon on their labels.

When I was in AZ this week to pick up Castrol Syntrax Gear oil, I looked at NanoPro gear oil. I specifically looked for the GL-5 spec on the bottle. There is none on the bottle. As noted by others, based on that I would avoid the product.

Without a spec cert attached I'm somewhat surprised AZ is selling this stuff. But according to the NanoPro website they do seem to have some sort of partnership to market it.

I needed some gear oil for the limited slip in my 94 Roadmaster Wagon, so saw it and put in 2 qts plus.
Driving around, sounds fine, no clutch grabbing. I had to mix in some 75-90 synthetic Mobil 1 to completely fill.

Product video sounds good.

My diff cover had rusted badly. It started leaking due to the seal surface corroded where it sits against the differential. I scraped off the rust and coated with PL polyurethane adhesive as a sealer. Then painted it black and sealed using Permatex gasket maker, no paper gasket used.
