First UOA post and wanted to do something different. I haven't seen any posts with both the UOA and the used filter cut open (doesn't mean there aren't any, just haven't seen it). I wanted to provide some information to let people make their own informed decisions about using synthetic or conventional, oil filters and how often to change the oil (miles and time).

Oil: Schaeffer 9000 5W-20 SN
Vehicle: 2003 Ford F-150 with the 5.4L
Miles on oil: 12,000 miles
Miles on vehicle: 152,000 miles
Make up oil: 3 quarts
Oil filter: Ford Motorcraft FL-820s
Miles on oil filter: 12,000
Oil filter code: 909171217
Elapsed time between oil changes: 20.5 months
Driving style - mostly mixed driving and some towing
Used Schaeffer's Webscope

Code:

OIL 9000 5w-20 9000 5w-30

Filter was only wavy in one spot and rest looked good.

Thank you for the UOA. Interesting to see wear metals drop with the reduction in viscosity yet with a slightly longer interval.

Was the same filter used in the 8/20/15 UOA?

Thanks for posting!

I am surprised by the ratio of zinc to phosphorus, usually the ppm level of the former is just a bit higher than the latter...it's over 2:1 here for both samples.

Hmmm...the 5w20 did better than 5w30...I'm curious to see if my own thick vs thin experiment shows the same results...

Was there any towing or heavy duty use during this OCI?

Yes, probably around 5-10%. I mostly use it for commuting and towed a trailer sometimes to deliver hay.

Love those old mod-motors. Very decent wearing.
Being a 2003, I presume it's a 2v engine, correct?

Overall good runs and keep it going!

The two Fords I now have had mostly a 0-20 wt oil diet. Both engines are still running like new, very clean, no oil consumption with my normal 10K OCI, and are showing no sign of engine wear. ++++ for 20 wt oils.
