Chris Cornell, lead singer of American hard rock bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, has died aged 52.
Cornell had been touring with Soundgarden, and was tweeting upbeat messages about a sold-out concert the band played in Detroit just hours before his death.

Wow! I was just appreciating his wonderful voice the other day when we sat down to watch James Bond, Casino Royale. You might remember he did the intro song to the movie that is called you know my name. Rest in peace brother

One of my favorites. Chris was incredible when I saw him with Soundgarden at lolapalooza in the 90's. Some are claiming that he took his own life. Truly sad.

Of all lead singers from the bigger grunge bands, only Eddie from Pearl Jam remains alive. Ugh.

This guy had some all time epic pipes, could sing with great volume nd passion while keeping it totally under control.
I was just enjoying "Hunger Strike" on YouTube after realizing I hadn't heard it in several years...Temple Of The Dog song, not Soundgarden. TOTD was sort of a Soundgarden/Pearl Jam mashup that formed before either band was big, they recorded an album as a tribute to a close friend of theirs who died from an overdose.

Sad news for sure, especially so given that he has three teenaged kids.

Sad and unexpected. I thought that he had gotten through all the negativity that plagues young rock stars, and was stable in the reformed Soundgarden. His voice was unique and irreplaceable.

Very shocking and sad. Thoughts and prayers to his family and band mates.

I really loved his voice. Thought it was truly one of the best voices in Rock of all time.

Never heard of him and I don't know I've ever listed to a song by Soundgarden, but 52 is pretty early to kick off. Sad.

I just died a little myself when I heard this. He was so iconic for me in my late teenage years onward. Hunger Strike, Outshined, Rusty Cage..

.. and even in my later years. I used to sing "Like a Stone" at karaoke all the time, so the song holds a special place for me.

Such a tremendous talent.. RIP, Mr. Cornell.

His wife said he appeared very happy and showed NO signs of distress. He also had three kids under 18 that he cared for deeply, so the suicide angle is quite weird. Maybe it was an erotica chocking thing and he accidentally killed himself?

heard the news today and have felt like I got punched in the gut all day.

His music has gotten me through some really tough times.

So sad it had to to end this way.

Wish his family and friends all the best
