Doing a cambelt on this, oil in the plug tubes too, so set the valve clearance while I was there. 191,000km, and all original, just a leaking waterpump. Cambelt breakages are less common now, not because there is less of them around, but cambelts last longer than in days of old, newer technology in their construction. No idea of service history, but it was a lease vehicle, missed out on a cambelt, but maybe it got some oil changes ?

The MIVEC gives variable inlet valve timing, and also variable lift. Operates in 3 stages and is pretty seemless, unlike the VTECH.

Which oil are you running? That is one super clean engine.

Pay no attention to the Mitsu hater. Their engines are top notch.

Very curious as to what you know, if anything, about its service history. The 4G69 is relatively easy on oil, but it's probably a safe bet, being a lease vehicle, that it will have had extended drain intervals. Some light varnish, but really good for 191,000 km!

Especially the bottom ends, they are bullet proof.

2006 Lancer wagon. Sold here new, not a JDI...it has a VIN, JD they just have a chassis number. Sold by us, but not new, maybe a trade in or picked up at auction. No service book, so no idea what was done before it turned up here. We use Mitsubishi oil, which is most likely Castrol Edge 5W-30...it's what Castrol recommend, and they supply Mitsi.

When we used to service lease vehicles, they were strict on factory service intervals, and tough on what we could do - no washer fluid and one pair of wiper blades a year. So it was probably well looked after. Maybe it was sold just as the cambelt was due, and the new buyer thought it was done.

Never seen a problem with a MIVEC engine, they only have a problem if you overheat them, or run them out of oil.

Is that one of those engines that relies on oil pressure to keep the valves in time? Interference engine?

Supposed to be interference, but haven't seen one break to know. Often a so called interference engine will have no problems. Depends on how they let go, usually it's on start up and no damage, on the road is a different story. If no oil pressure it would just run on the default setting until the engine seized.
