Far from being equal. MMA fighters fight for either prestige or money. Gladiators fought to live another day. If you can not see the difference it is not worth the attempt to explain the difference.

Obviously you didn't read the link. They have more in common than you think you know.
I read it. It only establishes a possibility that not all were slaves, and not all fought to the death.
It changes nothing in the context of then vs. now.
The article does not deny that under the old gladiator system, death and slavery were perfectly acceptable.
If Dana White were to be caught even discussing using a slave once, the whole thing would be shut down by the Feds in 5 minutes.
Any discussion of including death as a part of the organization would have every executive involved thrown in prison.
Why focus on these two issues alone? These two issues are exactly what makes the perspective of gladiators to have been so barbaric. If gladiators would have fought with fists, shook hands, and walked away we probably wouldn't even know much about them.
That's exactly why there is no such perspective of most of the martial arts. One guy got his butt kicked and likely walked away with only his pride broken.
MMA is hardly barbaric. Any person currently involved in MMA can walk away at any second and simply go do something else. Unlike ancient Rome, a retired fighter can literally go do anything they want to do if they want to do so. The only doors closed to them are the ones they close themselves.
