I have some leftover filters from a couple of vehicles that I have sold recently, and I was wondering whether either one of these would be a solid oversize fit for a Ranger.

Any insight or help would be most welcome.

Thanks!

The M1-301 is the right thread and gasket size, but its a bigger diameter can, so you will have to check fit yourself.
The other one is the wrong thread.

Thank you very much!

One related question. Would the wrong diameter result in oil leaks?

The "wrong" diameter sealing gasket would/could result in leaks. A larger diameter filter would not result in leaks as long as the sealing gasket diameters of the two filters are the same, or very close. The 7317 vs 9688/3593A is such an example. The latter is wider but same size gasket as former, so as long as access permits the wider will work without leaks.

Hmmm.... maybe it's best just to exchange.

That's an excellent explanation. Thanks a ton!

The Gasket on the 301 is the same as on the factory filter, but the can on the 301 is bigger around, if this makes sense. If you look at the 301, the gasket is not at the edge of the can, its smaller. It will screw on and seal, but its so much bigger you will have to make sure it won't hit anything on the engine or truck.
