What oil do you think would be best for the Toro 24.5 v-twin. Not sure if Toro makes their own motor or outsources it.

I was planning to go synthetic and was considering Shell Rotella 5W-40. It take 2 Liters.

Only issue I was having is the Rotella doesn't have friction modifiers which I think would be good for this engine. Maybe Mobil 1 0W40?

The mower is the Toro SW 4200 - Steering Wheel Zero Turn. Awesome on the hills. Steering wheel controls the casters and the rear wheels so I can turn on the hill. Goes up and down on even when wet without spinning or slipping. Old mower was a Husqvarna articulating mower and is was a roller coaster ride sliding down it all the time even dry. 1.25 acres mixed hill and flat.

15w-40 HDEO. Are you starting in below freezing temps where the 5W would be helpful?

That's the same as my Exmark...
My dealer says to use 10w30 or 10-40w.
Exmark even offers 20w50 for it.
I'm using Amsoil Signature 10w30 fs.

I could not follow the manual as it did not address this issue.
But the dealer I use handles all the warranty repairs. So 10w30 it is.

I did change the filter as well with an Ultra but the OEM filter was super clean at 5 hrs.
But the oil was not as pretty. It's a great mower.

The manual calls for conventional SAE30 or synthetic 5W30, or synthetic 10W30.

I'd run conventional SAE30 for the first 50 hours and then synthetic 10W30 after that. Toro doesn't make engines, they source them from China and elsewhere. Your 24.5HP engine is likely Chinese.

Manual says to use synthetic 5w20,5w30 or 10w30, conventional sae 30 or 10w30.

I still want to use synthetic but do not plan to run it below 50 degrees F.

Should I change the filter at the first 5 hr interval it does nto say but says to change oil after first 5 hrs.

As I said the filter change at 5 hrs was a waste of a filter.

I sure like Amsoil ASE 10W30/30 in my hard working OPE including my Scag Zero turn. Yes change filter on first oil change.

Sorry for the back from dead thread, but I had a question about SAE 30 oil. I have the 22.5hp Toro in a zero turn mower, and for my temperature range it recommends SAE 30 oil. I have SAE 30 oil from Supertech, but it says non-detergent. They used to make a SAE 30 for lawnmowers, but it has since been discontinued. They do make a SAE30 HD oil https://www.walmart.com/ip/Super-Te...ae2d3-fd0-16be6437b94d88&athena=true , which looks like it would be good. It has different API classifications though than the version that comes in a quart, which is pretty confusing. The manual calls for API service SF, SG, SH, SJ, or SL. With this information, would it be safe to use the Supertech HD SAE 30? Thanks in advance!

Air cooled OPE oil gets very hot . I did a ton of research , reading after I bought a Ariens zero turn with a Kawasaki 23 hp. engine . Updated owners manual had 20w50 for best protection . I ended up going with Mobil 1 15w50 . I changed factory fill after 6 hours and now have 25 hours on the Mobil and haven't burned any and still Amber color .

Don't overthink things. Use a SAE 30 HD in it. First oil change at 5 hours and every 100 hours or end of the season. I run Walmart Super Tech SAE 30 HD in my Timecutter HD 54. I also use a NAPA Gold 1394 oil filter.

I've been running nothing but 30 weight in a 23 hp Briggs V twin for 14 seasons. I change oil and filter each spring. I never have to add oil during the season.

Walmart should have their sn rated hd 30 on the shelf. If not, you can order it online. Any sn rated pcmo HD 30 will work great. Do you have any farm store near you? Often they sell their house brands super cheap, and of course they carry hd 30.

There is a rural king about an hour away, not worth the drive though. I'm not against using T6, but I think that's 5w cold right? I don't think I'll ever be missing in sub 70° weather. Does that Supertech 30w HD not meet the requirements?

I did find a wix cross reference for the oil filter, so I'm going that route.

The Super Tech SAE 30 HD meets the requirements. It's in the manuals oil chart. I wouldn't use it if it didn't meet the requirements.
Here's the Toro 24.5 hp oil chart

Are you referring to the supertech hd 30 cf rated diesel oil? Yes, that should work too. It will probably have higher detergency and more zinc/phosphorus than its sn counterpart, which isn't a bad thing. The oil I was referring to is pcmo, whereas the oil I think you're referring to is hdeo, similar to rotella t1 straight grade or delo 400 straight grade. All of the aforementioned oils will be fine.

It isn't the HDEO oil. It isn't much different than Castrol SAE 30 HD or other manufacturers SAE30HD.
