broken console shifter part

I just bought a 2009 Ford Taurus Limited. While waiting in line to get the emission test I placed the shifter in park. When I moved it into drive I heard the sound of breaking plastic and a part falling in the console. The shifter continued to work as it should. The brake interlock, backup lights and audible backup warning still work.
I took the trim off the console and found the part laying on the bottom of the console.

Does anyone know what this part is or what it does?
Thanks, Terry

It could be. I'm not sure how to test that theory without blowing up the transmission.

The shifter still seems to "feel" like it did before the break. It has the "notch" feel.
