Can you guys recommend a security camera setup? It should:
- have wireless cameras (4 of them);
- cameras should be triggered by a motion sensor;
- a storage of 1+ tb;
- access over the internet for live monitoring and review of archived material;
- 720p resolution is desirable.

What is your budget?
I recently went through the same thing. I didn't want to spend alot. Ended up with a Lorex brand. Works great but the monitor is suspect, though I haven't had any problems yet.
Cost me $300.

I'd look at Lorex brand, anything with 'sony' like quality is much more $. Mine is 720p, two indoor/outdoor cameras with night vision (cameras seem very nice), motion detection, and I slipped in a 64G card. This gets me about 65 hrs of record time.
Also it can use Skype or some such to view on your phone, but I don't do that.

I put up some Axis cameras at a boat club. Those cameras are about $300 each.

One thing to keep in mind is that a demo may show you a live picture of yourself in the monitor and it looks great. But they typically use heavy compression to store the video on disk. I would make sure you view recorded video rather than live video when you judge systems.

The Axis cameras had a mask you could setup for motion and then you could say when more than xx% pixels change from frame to frame then that is motion. Some cheap camera use what a outdoor light uses.

Also if the motion is not detected in the camera but in the "brains" then you have a ton of network traffic that gets thrown away.

IMO wireless systems are very subpar.. and you have to run power anyway.

Get a POE ethernet type with IP CAMERAS and a NVR.
720p digital.

Similar to this but I dont really recommend zmodo as reliable.

The NVR(network video recorder) provides PoE(power over ethernet)

And you simply have to run the ethernet cables.

This would be a typical quality example
taken from one of my cameras aimed out a dirty bay window.
Mounted outside the quality would be slightly better.

Can we see how the camera shows the outdoors, looking out that bay window after dark?

What is the model or model number of your Lorex?
How is the night vision?
Do you display the cameras indoors or outdoors?

IR LED wont shine through a window
so it doesnt work through a window after dark unless you have bright lights.

Thats my UPS cam for people who were stealing off my front step.

I plan on soffit mounting them on opposite corners of the front of the house this year but the broken arm is delaying that.

if you are close to chicago, i suggest going to a microcenter to check what they have available, see capabilities then ask questions.
then you can buy it over internet (il/cook county/chicago taxes....)

Rand, what brand would you recommend?

good move on ditching wireless. It never works very good.
You pay a ton for it... inferior... and still a power wire.
