I seems M1 5w50 has the FS moniker now along with Mobil 1 0w40. It has the additional "X2" name too....

I wish I could find M1 5W50 in stores. I need about 9 quarts every 6 months or so.

inasmuch as I recall FS stands for full synthetic a legal requirement in Germany to denote not a petroleum-derived HC (hydrocarbon) but a true chemically made in the lab with group 4 poly Alpha olefins or group 5 polyol esters, and other synthesized molecules.

I know there are some retailers in the US that have M1 5W-50 for sale, for those that need that grade. 5W-50 is FF in I think the Mercedes SLR and SLS, as well as a few other cars ?

I'm sure its night-and-day better than Castrol's version of. And way back like 12 or so years ago, I could have sworn I remembered Pennzoil having a PYB 5W-50. I tried them all in an old car I had. Made me think there was something correlation between the thicker the oil (the higher the second number) and how smooth the engine ran. Even at the 50..

Here's the data sheet for my corner of the world. http://pds.mobil.com/Australia-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil1_5W-50.aspx

Note it carries the "BMW High Performance Diesel," of which there is zero information online as to which cars require this oil.

This new "FS" formulation does not have that approval, nor the Lexus LFA approval, although it could be redundant. Interesting.

Nope, law in Germany says you cannot claim that it is Full Synthetic unless oil has more then 50% of PAO or Ester.
You can say synthetic technology etc. By the way, Mobil1 dos not sell this oil in Europe. Old 0W40 is still sold in Europe and caries SHC label not fully synthetic.
Also, 0W40 now is GTL based, and I am not sure about 5W50, probably also GTL.

Looks like a minor formula update. I'd still use it "with confidence", as people around here like to say.

M1 5w50 is sold in Europe, just not this FS formulation.

This new formula has a higher starting TBN and better MRV at-35C.

In Europe they are not selling FS 0W40, that is what I said. They are still selling "old" VISOM based 0W40.

Your post was not clear as to what "this oil" was, and people were only talking about synthetic oil labeling in Germany, with no previous mention of M1 0w40, I thought you were talking about M1 5w50.

Bothe 0W40 and 5W50 are GTL now in the U.S.
Someone said that that is because FS means Full Synthetic and it is for German market.
First, those FS letters are too small. When manufacturer wants to make a claim that their product is Full Synthetic, they emphasize that.
In Germany M1 would put Full Synthetic with huge letters. However, new version of 0W40 FS or 5W50 FS are not available in Germany. They still sell VISOM base since VISOM base meets BMW LL-01 (IMO).
The questions is: Is GTL considered in Germany Full Synthetic?
