I've noticed a trend as of late with High Mileage synthetic oils. I know Mobil One has had a synthetic High mileage for awhile now, but now its Valvoline, Castrol and Pennzoil. What is the benefit of a full syn High Mileage, Vs just running regular synthetic? I noticed only Valvoline and The new (to me at least) edge high mileage are DEXOS rated? Why is that?

I think it might be pretty simple...

1. Synthetic for extended drain intervals.
2. High Mileage for seal conditioners (and maybe an additive pack with a little extra for keeping engines clean).

You can get 1, or 2, or 1&2 together. People are keeping their cars longer (as modern cars tend to run longer and jobs pay less than they did in the 90s), and so high mileage is popular. I like extended drain intervals, so I run PP Syn High Mileage on my nearly 20 year old toyotas.

Valvoline has a pretty nice add-pak in their HM oils. They are getting nice reports and customers seem to like them. They started out making blends in HM (Maxlife red bottle), but now have a full syn in HM

Because cars are running much longer now....some to 200k and beyond. Gives people the benefits of longer drain intervals, but makes them feel better giving them a "little extra" protection. Granted, most engines already on a synthetic should not need it...

Wife's 13 year old Cavalier has been running on syn since 12k (now almost 120k) and the car still does not burn oil.....

that's nothin. I had a 97 Escort that started on M1 5w30 at 87k miles. At 150k miles when we sold it, I was doing yearly OCI's with no oil consumption between changes (OCI's were roughly every 12-15k miles). It still was not burning anything at the time of sale

I believe Mobil 1 is not dexos because its high mileage additive pack has higher levels of zinc. Same reason that it is still only rated API SL.

To me, they are simply full synthetic oils which are "specially formulated to meet the needs of vehicles as they age past 75,000 miles"

Every manufacturer will have their own way to describe it

For one, because they are both API SN / GF-5 oils formulated for newer cars.
The Mobil 1 HM meets the older SL spec.

Mobil 1 High Mileage is only API SL for vehicles 2004 and older, hence why it can't carry the modern DEXOS certification. Valvoline MaxLife Full Syn & Pennz. Platinum High Mileage have been around a while but they are just now becoming widely available for a reasonable price in multiple viscocities. Castrol's Edge Full syn High Mileage is a completely new product though. From what I have seen and heard, Valvoline is phasing out SynPower in favor of Full Synthetic with MaxLife.

High mileage oils have additional seal conditioners to recondition the engine seals and gaskets to prevent oil leaks as well as slow or even stop leaks that are already there. High mileage oils are generally a little thicker than their regular counterparts but not always.

Mobil 1 10W40 HM is SN rated. High mileage oils are also at the thicker end of the viscosity chart as well.

I don't think I've seen it here. Will it suffer the same fate as PUP?

How long are you going to run it?

I really have not given that part a thought. 7.5K miles? 5K miles?

The reason Mobil 1 10w40 HM is SN rated is because that viscosity is not required to have lower ZDDP levels.

My 2012 camry is at 109k now but I dont run any High Mileage oils, just the regular 0w20 toyota oil we have on tap at the dealer I work at.
No problems at all with leaks, slight oil consumption (0w20 is very thin)

As far as I know there is no such thing as Pennzoil ultra high mileage oil. There is only Pennzoil platinum high mileage. Check the Pennzoil website.

You're correct. I was thinking of PU when I was typing my post. My apologies.
But, I do have (6) qts. of PPHM 5W30 oil.
