Microsoft’s antivirus performed well.

It just depends on who you want to believe. Here are the results from AV Comparatives who is an ISO certified lab and they rated ESET higher. Here is a description of the lab from the introduction in the their December 2015 report:

About AV-Comparatives:
We are an independent test lab, providing rigorous testing of security software products. We were
founded in 2004 and are based in Innsbruck, Austria. AV-Comparatives is an ISO 9001 certified organisation. We received the certificate of TÜV Austria for our management system for the scope: “Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software”.

Here is a summary of the test results (taken from the report above):

The AV Comparatives results align a lot more closely with my real world experience with the products as well. The Microsoft product is borderline useless, AVG, McAfee and Avast are all garbage with Avira and Bitdefender trading punches on the free offerings.

Overkill - agreed; this matches my experiences too. I have used most of them through the years and always come back to ESET or Kaspersky for the overall best performing security software. It makes me wonder if some of the review "companies" are secretly pushing a product.

I've moved my computers to Panda. It seems to be exceptionally unobtrusive, effective enough, and is completely free.

Of course, I've never had a virus on any of my computers, ever, regardless of operating system. I guess my computer use is relatively low risk to begin with.

I've found IRL ESET is still top of the pile.

ESP. if the user has average or lower computer skills.

By that I meant it blocks click malware much better than some.

Even had kaspersky that got owned by "facetime for pc" malware

Same person with eset.. no issues.
