I have a 98 Ford Escort with an iB5 trans and after all those years I've decided to do a trans oil change. The problem is that I drained the old oil before I had a new one to save time as there is a Ford dealership close to my house and I assumed it would be easy to just buy the trans fluid there, but Ford is changing their oil supplier here in Brazil and there's no WSD-M2C200B fluid anywhere, so I used the Total SynFE 75W90 GL4/5 I found online.

The thing is, the manual calls for a GL4 fluid and Total says on the SynFE's product sheet that the oil is compatible with the M2C200B specification, but there's no mention of this on the bottle, there's just a few homologations there and they are all for differential applications, so has anybody used this oil in an iB5 trans? Can I trust on the product sheet?

Thanks

So you have gearbox wich calls for GL4 oil...

And you also have GL4/5 gearbox oil wich is "yellow metal friendly"

If the grade (75w90) is right for your gearbox...then everything Will be ok

What your car needs is:
Or original GL4 oil
Or modern substitute with GL4+ or GL4/5 or GL5/MT-1 specd oil

What you should NOT do is to Use straight GL5 specd oil in your GL4 gearbox...that Will chemicaly eat away your synchros And gearbox Will start to shift as garbage

NO..... When it says GL-4/GL-5 that means it is GL-5 EP protection that also meets (surpasses) GL-4 EP protection. It is not for synchronized transmissions.

Click here for details...... The difference between GL-4 and GL-5 oils

While there are a lot of changes and developments these days, and That product spec includes some ZF specs for GL-4 (but not car transmissions), it also includes SAE J2360. I have seen some GL-4+ products that come close to SAE J2360, I haven't seen any that meet the synchronization requirements of today's cars and pass J2360.

If you do use it, pay attention to the shifts. If they are any slower or harder, change to another.

What I wanted to tell him was.......that he CAN use 75w90 GL4+ or 75w90 GL4/5 or 75w90 GL5 with additional MT-1 spec in his gearbox specd for GL4 only

I dont get why are you so upset with that SAE J2360 standard?

I don't think most folks are convinced that MT-1 is still the optimal product for a light duty synchronized manual transmission...

Use a product that is most specifically designed for that application..a GL-4 ONLY product.

Do NOT use GL-4/5, GL-4+, ect..

The label should say "GL-4"

Thanks, guys. I'll keep an eye on the gear changes to see if there's something wrong. It's apparently fine for now tbh, but I think I will buy the OEM fluid as soon as it becomes available again at the dealerships.

Too bad I wasted 50 US Dollars on the SynFE though lol

Any of the following products are suitable dedicated GL-4 MT fluids for the SAE 75W90 grades:

3. Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90

4. Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75w-90
