I stopped by my local Wal-Mart auto section last night and they are now selling several popular size batteries under their ValuePower brand for $48.88. Batteries come with a one year warranty. This could be a good option for budget minded consumers. That's about $60 cheaper than the comparable MAXX battery. The battery case was the same identical case with the same markings and stampings as the Johnson Controls MAXX battery, so probably made in the same factory with cheaper specs.

I don't buy auto parts that have the name "value" or "budget" in the name.

That's exactly how market differentiation works: selling the same product at different price points.

Economists talk about a 'demand curve' for a commodity product. It doesn't exist when marketing people are involved.

Interstate at Costco sells for about $79 with at least 3 years warranty - if youre planning to keep it longer.

Maybe for something like a john deer or an extra battery for car audio... But I'd rather run something higher quality for both.

How much is that Costco membership? In my case, the nearest Costco is 60 miles away.

It's a good option for those that are broke (many Wal-Mart shoppers?) and if you plan on trading in the car in the next 18 months. I'll still continue to buy MAXX batteries with the three year warranty, since they last 2.85 years down here in south Florida and I always get a new battery without fail for free under warranty right before the warranty is up.

This is a good alternative to junkyard batteries. Wreckers seem to charge around $30 but give you a 30 day warranty at most. Those batteries can be hit or miss. $20 more and you get a full year warranty and a brand new battery.

I bought an Exide battery 10 years ago for like $70.

Still good.

When it comes to automotive batteries, a more expensive battery is not a "better" battery, it just has a longer warranty. You are paying for potential failure up front, the more expensive battery is not better built.

People think Die-Hard batteries are so good because they have such long warranties, truth is, you pay for all that "goodness" up front.

I'm not saying it's out of the question that these are rebranded decent batteries. They could be the same thing but with no warranty and a corresponding lower cost. But I'd be interested in the weights of this and a decent battery in the same size, and wouldn't be surprised if there was a difference.

Put another way... sure the story in a hardcover vs a softcover is the same but the price is different. But every product category doesn't have that same superficial differentiation going on. It is absolutely possible Walmart is asking for the cheapest battery possible because there is a subset of customers who would want that.

Highlander still has the original Panasonic. That's what quality is. Unfortunately, not available in the US even at the dealer.

This is one feature in a premium JC battery: http://www.powerframe.com/us-en/technology

I heard the motorcraft ones have even more goodies.

But the question is, what is the quality of the battery?

I looked online, seems like they only carry it in 7 sizes so it's somewhat limited.

It's about time prices came down. I think the price of lead had gone up, but I think the commodity prices have been coming down lately so in theory if the price of batteries were high before, they should be going down now because the price of lead is down but that doesn't seem to be happening, maybe the retailers are just locking in extra profits. Same with motor oil, they don't seem to have come down much over the last year even though the cost of gas has come down a lot over the last year.

I saw these last week and was wondering If they are just Everstart's with a shorter warranty. I image so.
