Hello,

Whilst I have gained plenty of great information from BITOG I have a query that does not seem to have come up in any detail. So here goes a lengthy post number one.
Below is the text I posted on my 'home forum' however this is an oil specific question so I figured my question might best be answered here.

At 75000km as an act of preventative maintenance I took my 2012 Ford Kuga 2.5 with AW55-51 AT to a gearbox specialist who has been doing business for a quarter of a century.
I had not researched what oil needed to be used but left it to the garage since I was sure they’d dealt with this box and its requirements before.

Fast forward 2 weeks and I ask the garage out of curiosity what oil they had used. The answer is Fuchs Dexron III.
When I Googled Dex III and AW55 transmission there were many posts regarding how this is the incorrect spec and how one should use JWS 3309 spec oil available from Mobil, Toyota and Volvo to name a few.
The AW55 manual appears to warn against it’s (Dex III) use.

I covered 1000km or 600 miles in the interim and am a little concerned about any damage that may have been done. Shifts are slightly less smooth and the Torque Converter does not appear to be locking up like it was. Fuel consumption seems to be up a little too which could be explained by the above. Two specialists say it is very unlikely I’ve damaged anything. (easy driving, haven’t been towing, largely freeway driving)

I have found Volvo oil – Part 1161640 which is approved for use in AW55 transmissions. It is not ridiculously expensive at £25 for a 4L bottle. There is no Mobil 3309 in this country.

I have been told that no method will completely remove the Dex III from the Torque Converter so there will be some residual Dex III in the new 3309 fluid. (By this reasoning there is still some residual Ford/Volvo 3309 in the current Dex III) It has been recommended that I have the box taken out, the coolers and TC cleaned out and then fill with 3309. Labor is £250 for this.

So my questions are as follows:
- Do I just run 16L of 3309 through the system at the gearbox garage who have the correct machine and remove most of the Dex III?
- Do I remove gearbox and clean completely, then fill with 3309? (More than twice the cost of option 1)
- Is it a disaster if after flushing there is maybe 10% Dex III 90% 3309?

My objective is to not spend the next couple of years second guessing whether or not I made the correct decision at this point in time.

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Absolutely correct.

Whatever you do...DO NOT remove the tranny or any other hard part.
I bet things will be fine with just flushing 8L (or 12) through it...16L is overkill in my opinion. I really doubt a few ounces of Dex 3 will cause any issues.

I just changed the fluid in mine (AL4), double flushed it in 700 miles, with the correct one LT71141 (JWS3309 compatible) and I was having the same issues the op relates with my transmission. I'm leading to the cleaning process of the new fluid will make the tranny act for a while. After the valve body got rid of the particles to the filter, it is shifting and locking better again.

Tell the mechanic it's shifting poorly because of the incorrect fluid and request he flush with the correct fluid. A small % of the old fluid won't matter if most is out.

Get the Dex3 out of your unit.
All the members of the Volvo boards refer to guaranteed damage to your transmission if Dex3 is used.
Do drain and fills 100 miles apart. You'll get out 3.5 quarts per drain on level ground.
Lift the left side of the vehicle more and you'll get closer to 4.
We've had 5 of these units in our family.
All you need for that transmission is the 18mm drain plug gasket (thin aluminum washer), a 24mm wrench and long funnel to reach the dipstick tube.
Any fluid which has Toyota T-IV or Mobil 3309 or Saab 3309 or "all Volvo except CVT" on the bottle will work.
Petro-Canada, Comma,Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc LV all work. Kira

Thank you greatly for your many responses.

So the overall response is flush and change to the correct oil.
By following this advice there will still be a residual amount of dex III mixed in with 3309. I can only deduce that this is not a problem and that the two oils are compatible? (Even if post oil change the dex III initially only makes up 5 - 10%)

Thanks Kira, I will keep this in mind. I have access to a garage with lifts and equipment so I'll go this route early this week.
Subsequent to this I will do drain and fills with the regular services.

I am curious - pbm - why an absolute no to removing the tranny and hard parts? Not questioning your advice, just curious in unchartered territory.

Toyota T-IV is available locally.

What ATF #?

Add a fluid converter(Lubegard, Smarthlend).

After that, an 8-12 qt exchange is good enough.

Never assume a shop knows what they are doing.

I am not sure which. The garage was not over forthcoming with information. Suffice to say that they could not obtain Castrol so they opted for Fuchs. Exactly which product, they have yet to say.

An update on the situation - drained as much oil as we could, removed around 6L and replace this with Volvo 3309. The oil that came out was described as 'weak' by the gearbox specialist.

1000 miles on and no problems and we will do another drain and fill in a few 1000 miles.
