Came off a friends 09 Ridgeline with 173k KM (~110k miles). Filter ran for 5k miles with unknown dino jiffy lube oil. Looks like a champ made filter.

The pleating is ugly as it gets, but no tears, bonding was strong, bypass was flexible and opened easily enough. The adbv was stiff, nothing like the silicon I'm used to.

I changed the oil for him with PYB 5w30 and a FU. He's heading out on a cross country trip towing a 3500 pound trailer and expects to travel ~8k miles on this trip.

Filter looks normal for a cheap, paper filter. Good move getting a Fram Ultra. Curious as to why you don't think a full top-tier synthetic like Mobil1 0w-40 shouldn't be used (not Group II swill) when towing a trailer?

I've been around long enough to see many engines go hundreds of thousands of miles, under severe service, with regular 1980's and 1990's spec'd oil. Plus it's not my engine so I couldn't care less

And the fact that he's only run jiffy lube dino in this engine. I'm not going to be the one that introduces a new variable.

That is a good way of putting it. It was nice of you to change his oil, but if you were to use synthetic and if it was to leak (that's a lot of ifs.) ... it'd be your goose.

Realistically, it'd probably be fine, but I would have upgraded to a quality synthetic (preferably a HDEO) too.

Well, I at least did him a favor of up'ing the visc a notch. Had I followed the manual he'd be running 5w20 dino in there

Don't know much about temperature and viscosity eh?

At least the oil won't drop below a 20 grade during his trip.
