I have a 2012 Volkswagen Beetle 2.5L and my grandmother has a 2012 Eos 2.0L TSI. Our cars are both due for an oil change. Should we stick with the same oil that the dealership has been putting in it which is Castrol 5w40? My boyfriend runs Mobil one 5w30 in his VWs and he changed my oil in my Beetle once now and that's what he used. I have been doing some reading and it seems like a lot of people use 0w40. Need recommendations!

Agree with simple_gifts above. Stick to an oil that meets VW 502.00 spec, especially if you're still under warranty. But even post warranty, it's a good idea.

Castrol 5w40 or 0w40
OR
Mobil1 0w40

The 0w40s are easy to find at Walmart and priced very competitively.

Drop dealership oil. That Castrol is suitable, but not at all on par with M1 0W40 or Castrol 0W40 which you can find in Wal-Mart.
Tell your bf to drop that Mobil1 5W30 unless he is using Mobil1 ESP 5W30, which usually you have to order online and carry VW 504.00/507.00 approval.
Easiest way:
1. get oil filter in dealership ($11-12).
2. Get 5qt bottle of M1 0W40 or Castrol 0W40 in Wal-Mart.

VW's need more than 5qts. 2.5 Jetta specs 6.3qts. However I use 6.5 qts to bring the oil a hair over mid upper range on dip stick.

I was referring to 2.0T, but yes, 5cyl would need more.

As others have said, the dealer Castrol 5w40 is suitable and obviously meets VW502 spec, Castrol's 0w40 and Mobil1 0w40 are much better and no more expensive, and most likely cheaper since you can get them in 5 quart jugs at Wal-Mart for about $26. Also, don't let him use the M1 5w30 no matter which one it is; it doesn't meet VW502 spec.

Depending on quality of gas, VW 504.00/507.00 is better suitable for DI engines and 5K OCI.
Though, I would say that I would feel confident using that spec for 5k only in California.

I don't disagree with this. That's why I'm currently running Motul 8100 x-clean 5w40, which meets MB229.51 and VW502 (which my car requires). I'm hoping with it being lower SAPS (MB229.51 spec) it'll help slow down intake valve buildup.

Yeah X-Clean is Mid-SAPS. So far I think it is combination of lower SAPS, running car hard often, and changing oil at 5K.
Hopefully EPA will be able to lower sulfur in 2017.

VW 505.01 has a lower SAPS content than oils that just meet VW 505. I would consider an oil that meets 502, 505, and 505.01. The current Valvoline 5w40 meets those specs, and NAPA has it.

If it is MST then it should have 505.01. If it is HST then it is only 502.00 and 505.00.

That's odd. I regoogled it and the PDS I found this morning was different from the one I found last night. Odd lol. Yea, you're right.

Running Castrol 0w40 in my 2.5, you can typically find it on sale at Walmart for $21.50/5qt jug. I normally pick up 3 at a time for 2 oil change worth. I also found the dealer OEM oil filters are cheaper, picked some up a little while ago for under $9/ea, while the parts house was almost $13. I did run the Castrol 5w40 (before I was on BITOG, heh..), but it was almost $9 per quart. If I was a betting man, the run of regular M1 5w30 didn't hurt it, 2.5's aren't known to be hard on oil or very high strung. I'd go back to the approved however.

Running M1 5W30 in 2.5 should not be a problem. It is a very good oil, and 2.5 does not have turbo and it is build for reliability not performance. If it was 2.8 V6 (older engine) or 3.0 V6 it would be different story.
Still, I would stick to 0W40 because those are superior oils.

Go to Wally World.... screw VW specs, and look at:

Shell Rotella T6
Chevron Delo 400LE 5w40

or if you want to spend extra money, Mobil 1 turbo diesel truck.

all available in gallon containers.

all have stout additive packages

Shell & Chevron have a Sulphated ash of 1.00
Mobil 1 TDT, is slightly lower at .95

Castrol Edge 0w40 does come close, at 1.15
